DNF Review: The Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker
Publisher: Little, Brown Books
Release Date: June 2nd, 2015
Source: Netgalley
Date Read: DNF
368 pages
Rating: --

Your greatest enemy isn't what you fight, but what you fear.

Elizabeth Grey is one of the king's best witch hunters, devoted to rooting out witchcraft and doling out justice. But when she's accused of being a witch herself, Elizabeth is arrested and sentenced to burn at the stake.

Salvation comes from a man she thought was her enemy. Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful and dangerous wizard in the kingdom, offers her a deal: he will save her from execution if she can break the deadly curse that's been laid upon him.

But Nicholas and his followers know nothing of Elizabeth's witch hunting past--if they find out, the stake will be the least of her worries. And as she's thrust into the magical world of witches, ghosts, pirates, and one all-too-handsome healer, Elizabeth is forced to redefine her ideas of right and wrong, of friends and enemies, and of love and hate.

Sigh. So apparently this is another one of those books that you either loathe entirely, or absolutely love. Sadly, I'm in the former group.

There are a lot of things that stopped me from continuing, the first being my expectations haha. No but seriously, here's the rundown.

The main character is, contradicting. In other words she doesn't live up to her description. In the beginning, she's described as the best witch hunter, yet the number of mistakes she makes is larger than I would have expected. Wouldn't an experienced hunter not have many of these problems? Also, how did she get so good in the first place? I know she was trained, but I'm just not convinced.

Everything happens in the first 15%. Let me tell you what happened in the first...what, 10 minutes of reading the novel (Ok maybe not 10 minutes but same thing). The MC, Elizabeth, kills a necromancer by accident, drowns her sorrows in ale and absinthe, gets questioned by two random, sketchy guys looking for someone (*cough* her *cough*), has witches herbs in her pocket which causes the Inquistor, her employer for YEARS, to accuse her of being a witch without a doubt...even though she's a witch hunter. Oh, and this happens because she assumes the King wants to sleep with her.

There are way too many generic characters, and I can't keep track of them all. And I also don't care about them. There's a lot of guy characters, and from what I've heard (not that I read this far), most of them are attracted to Elizabeth. Or at least like her a lot. So yeah, I'm just going to avoid all that. Nope.

I really wanted to LOVE The Witch Hunter, because I've seen SO MANY awesome reviews for it! But I don't know, I just ended up not liking the way it was going. It was way too unbelievable (Elizabeth gains MORE wanted status than the Most Wanted Man in the land. By having witch herbs. And escaping. I think that's A LITTLE too much there).

To be honest, I think I'm just going to leave the reading of this to someone else, and spoil myself later. BECAUSE THIS IS A RANT DNF REVIEW, please take my review as a grain of salt. Because I know this is a well loved book and plus I didn't even finish this. I'm a little black sheep here :)

I KNOW I AM SO MAD AT MYSELF :(
I actually don't think I've actually seen super glowy reviews for this one, so you're not the only one. Everything you mentioned does sound annoying.

Yeah it's definitely been either hate or love!
I tried reading Witch Hunter but my eARC from NetGalley had some weird formatting issues. A lot of letters were missing from from words. For example, if the sentence started with a T, it was missing. So after a couple of pages I gave up. It was just too distracting.
I'm sorry you didn't like it, but you definitely ain't the black sheep. I think a lot of reviewers didn't enjoy it either. I'm not sure if I will buy it after all... :/

Huh that's weird because I also got mine from NG and it seemed to be fine! Weird formatting always messes me up, and I find it weird that people don't talk about it more.

And yeah, I know this is bad but I'm glad I didn't pick this up at BEA :P
I'm seeing so many reviews for this book, and people are loving it--and then you. Now I'm nervous. I don't want to hate this book. I better borrow it from the library and not buy it. Because, if like you said everything happens in the beginning--I'm already displeased.

Hahahha and then me. I FEEL BAD NOW. I hope you like it so much more than I did!
I've actually seen more negative reviews for the book than positive ones and the more I hear about the book. the less likely I am to read it .-.

I've seen more than one person question her witch hunting abilities and it seems odd to me that her employer of several years doesn't even give her the benefit of doubt and automatically presumes she is actually a witch. O_O

ALSO EW GENERIC CHARACTERS.

I am sorry this didn't work out for you Val, especially since you wanted it to :( <3

At first I saw ALL positive reviews, and now I'm starting to see all the negative ones. But I'm glad I'm not the only one that questions some of the things that happen in the book. Like wut.

Thanks Rashika!
All of these things are accurate. I wrote a (very basic) DNF review for it just to send to the pub, but it was the same thing- too many random characters, all of whom I cared exactly zero percent about. But let's be honest, I WILL be needing to use some gifs and snark at some point. How far did you make it, anyway? And huge thanks to Holly, who read it, taking one for the team, and spoiled it for us!!

I think I made it only to 30%? I'm not sure. AND I'M SO GLAD HOLLY SPOILED IT FOR US because I wouldn't have made it. Gah the ending was also so generic.
Your's is not the first low rating review for this book on the blogosphere but when you look at things like GoodReads, it's filled with 5 star reviews!? I'm so lost on this haha guess I might give it a try although your review gives warning signs that I probably should avoid this >.<

I don't know? I guess it's just people's different tastes! You could still try it and see where you stand hahah!
What a shame. I just saw that one of my Goodreads buds DNF this either. She sited a lot of the same issues. I hope that I end up being in the camp of people who love this book. I just won a copy, so I will be reading it at some point.

Yeah I think it depends on the person reading it, and deciding whether the issues bug them or don't! I can't wait to hear your thoughts it you do read it!
Oh no... but you might be quite right: either we love this or hate it. Because of that, I'm afraid I will be in the last category but I just love witches so I HAVE to give this a shot. Though, if I don't like, I will DNF too. I did hear before that there is a panoply of characters that come and go... hm. Great review though, Val!!

You should give this a shot! Though honestly I didn't get to any witches in the first 30%, so I don't know whether that'll affect you or not. Thanks Lola! Also "panoply" is a weird word. Gonna add it to my mental dictionary
I've been feeling like I'll be a black sheep for this one as well, but we'll see what happens when I pick it up this weekend! I have no problems DNFing it, since I got it through trade and don't have to report back to a publicist ;)

Damnit. I got this book for review. :( Boo.

Booo! Maybe you will like it! Hahahahahah! I will be looking out for your review ;)
INTERESTING. I have only read two reviews for this book; yours, and a really positive one.

To be honest, I don't have an interest in the book, and I wouldn't have picked it up (for a few reasons, mainly being the fact that I have WAY too many series to read as it is, and a book has to be pretty special to be added to the series TBR, to be honest) even if you hadn't written this ranty DNF review.

But based on what happened in the beginning of the book? NO. I hate it when things are irrational and don't make any sense, and it seems like this is what this book is built upon. So I'll be giving this one a pass.

Great review, Valerie!

INTERESTING!

This is just incredibly fast paced, and a lot of things happen. And yeah. It wasn't for me. I'm kind of glad I DNFed it because I also have a billion series to keep up with. And I just started a ton of new series :P

Thanks Chiara!
