Winning what you want may cost you everything you love...

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Oh The Winner's Curse. I don't even know where to start. This was my last book to read for the Make Me Read It Readathon, and it was pretty phenomenal. Throughout the book, I felt conflicted about who to support. Should I support Kestral and the Valorians? Or Arin and the enslaved Herrani?

I have no idea who to support

When it comes to world-building, I can definitely see this as more historical fiction rather than fantasy. We're introduced to Kestral, who's the daughter of the military general of the Valorians. She's a great strategist, but not so much a great fighter. She is also somewhat sympathetic to the Herrani, freeing her Herrani nurse on one of her birthdays.

And then Arin comes along and RUINS everything! As a new slave recently bought by Kestral at an auction, Arin uses his new "status" to scope out the residence. Unfortunately, Kestral never discovers his intentions in time, and plus she pretty much gives him free reigns (why?). Oh and obviously there is romance, which kind of puts a damper on Arin's plan.

SO I AM CONFLICTED. Should I support Arin and his rebellion? The fact that the Herrani were forced from their land and enslaved is a great reason for that. But then there's also Kestral, who's pretty much had her life ruined because of Arin. Kestral holds a spot in my heart because she's musically talented. And just seeing her in such a predicament makes me sad.

I guess when it comes to Valorian vs. Herrani, I'm glad that the Herrani rebelled in the end.

My only problem is that it was kind of slow at points

Especially the parts where Kestral was stuck with Arin. At that point there wasn't really anything plot wise happening, other than what was happening in the background. There were also some points before the rebellion where the plot slowed down a bit.

However, I can say that the romance was executed well. It wasn't instalove, and Kestral's emotions concerning Arin's betrayal were realistically done. Obviously her feelings for him will change after everything's he's done to her.

Overall, I really liked The Winner's Curse. It wasn't perfect, and it was slow at times, but it still was a fun read. Though I do have to say that I do not think this is fantasy at all, but more of a historical fiction-like genre.

SO many people love this one. I'm not feeling the fact that it sounds like historical fiction but I still want to read it one of these days. Glad you at least enjoyed despite it being slow!

Yes you should read it :D :D
I loved this one, too. Which is a surprise in itself, considering I'm not huge on fantasy. Mind you, this has a pretty basic fantasy elements, though.

Yes that is true! Every time I think of fantasy though I usually think of MAGIC and CHOSEN ONES, and SPECIAL SNOWFLAKES and all that jazz. Hahaha.
I actually really loved Arin. I read this series a while ago and feel like the second book really shows you how compassionate Arin is for Kes. I love him because he was so cute and I have a thing for rebelling bad boys. It's that aspect of Marie's writing that makes her characters and boys so swoonworthy. Loved the review and hope that you pick up the second book!

Thanks Alex! Yes he was definitely a rebel haha. I'm excited to see what will happen in the second book!
I think a great part of the book is that its so tricky to decide who to support - things aren't neatly black and white. Marie Rutkoski has such beautiful prose - glad you enjoyed this one!

Thanks! Yes that's definitely another thing that made me love this :)
Yeah, more historical fiction, and that's why I loved it so much I think :P But the little bit of fantasy was a nice touch! After I reread the book, I think I'm more on the side of the Herrani. The Valorians are a bit too ignorant for me haha.

Yeah it's like a mix between fantasy and historical fiction almost? Or I guess a fantasy with no magic type of thing. Unless magic will appear later on in the series though I highly doubt it. And yeah I don't like the Valorians. Besides Kestral :D
YAY! I'm glad you liked this one, Valerie :D I read it when it was released, and I really liked it. Maybe not QUITE as much as some other people, but it was still one of my most memorable reads from 2014.

I agree with you about the fantasy thing. I need something magical or unworldly to have a book classified as fantasy, so i have no idea why this one is marketed as such. But it's not really historical, either, because it's made up. Maybe there should be a new genre called alternate history, because I seriously cannot bring myself to classify this as fantasy, because there is nothing fantastical about it.

I really liked the romance, too. But beware, there isn't as much of it in the sequel (which had its pros and cons).

Lovely review <3

:D :D Yes it's definitely a memorable read! I have the Winner's Crime so I'll probably be reading that very soonish!

That's what I was thinking! Because I'm trying to think of a book that was classified as fantasy, and then didn't have magic in it, but I can't. And this could definitely be alternate history haha!

I figured that there wouldn't really be romance in the sequel, seeing as how the ending played out! But that's okay! I'm not super big on romance, but we'll see :)

THANKS CHIARA!
Enjoyed your review, Val! I've had this one on my shelf for quite a while and just haven't read it yet. I'm actually happy to hear you describe as more historical fiction than fantasy. I'm not much of a fantasy fan (hard when it feels like that's all everyone is reading these days!) so that makes me even more excited for it!

Yes I mean it's fantasy in that it takes place in a different world, but that's pretty much it! So I think you will definitely enjoy it
I totally agree with you about this! I thought the first one was kind of slow too. And the thing with the Valorians and the Herrani, I totally agree. I mean, I loved Kestrel... but not anyone else she knew, basically. And I loved Arin, but also I didn't hate his people, so I think I was rooting for them, basically! (Oh, and IMO, The Winner's Crime is better- SO good!)

YES GLAD TO HEAR THAT. Because I feel like sure The Winner's Curse had plot, but it kind of died down after everything happened, you know? Then things got slow, and now I'm hoping for more in The Winner's Crime
I'm glad you enjoyed this one, I also gave it four stars and was conflicted on which side to be on! This one really did seem to be a little closer to historical fiction than fantasy, it kind of lacked fantastical elements. Agreed that the pacing was a bit slow sometimes though. Great review :)

Thanks! And I'm hoping that The Winner's Crime has a faster pace!
I heard someone call this book "historical fantasy" and I think that's a good way to describe it. I enjoyed this one quite a bit; glad you did too!

yay! you read this!!

I loved that conflicted feeling about who should I be rooting for, I feel like it says a lot about the author's ability to really present both sides well. I also think it will lead to some amazing plot twists. I totally agree about the slow parts, but they didn't really bother me too much.

Do you plan to read book 2?
