Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

I feel so bad for saying this, but MAN I don't know if it was just me, but I thought I would absolutely love this book. It was literally screaming LOVE ME because of dragons, fantasy, DRAGONS, an awesome heroine, DRAGONS.

But I don't know. It was weirder than I thought. But also it's kind of my fault because I don't think it was a good choice for me to listen to the audiobook. I'm not good at paying attention to the story, especially when there's a confusing part, like a switch in POV or a flashback, just because I never get any warning when it happens.

END RANT ABOUT AUDIOBOOKS. I really need to lay off them. They do not work for me :/

Yes yes, ok but Seraphina, and DRAGONS. Basically, in a nutshell, there are these two kingdoms, the human kingdom of Goredd (Another bad thing about audiobooks? I have no idea how everything is spelled so I have to look everything up. Ok I'm done now for real) and the dragon kingdom of....ok there's a dragon kingdom too. There's a tense relationship between the two species since they came out of a way a couple decades ago, and both sides still kind of don't trust each other, but are working on it.

So there's that setting, but unfortunately it's discovered the a member of the royal family got his head eaten off during a hunting party, and since everyone assumes it's a rogue dragon, things are not okay. Luckily, we've got Seraphina! Our awesome brave and stubborn heroine! Who's a music mistress (assistant to the conductor of an orchestra), and she's involved with the entire royal court, and a certain prince.

Before I go on, and if you haven't noticed, this book goes through a lot of worldbuilding, and it's extremely detailed and well-down. Honestly, I could spend another 1000 words explaining how everything is, and STILL not be done with my review. So for now, I'll just go on with what I liked, and what I didn't like.

First off, SERAPHINA HAS A HUGE SECRET. And with that secret, comes many, many confusing things. Like how she has a mental garden in her head she has to take care of, and if she doesn't take care of it she gets headaches. And not only that, but she has people living in her mental garden. Yeah. It's really weird. I was very, VERY confused the first time this was explained. I remember driving to Boston at the time, and thinking "What am I listening to...."

Second, there are a lot of characters! Like, a lot a lot. It's easy to get lost sometimes, which is why I should've read the book rather than listening to the audio book.

But other than that, I very much enjoyed the plot and the story AND THE TWIST in the end (which is also really weird to think about). The story itself was rather slow, and I kept wanting Seraphina's and Prince Lucien's relationship to develop faster because THAT TENSION and ALL THE WAITING. It really kills me hahah. I SHIP THEM.

Overall, Seraphina is a very solid start to a series (AND I HAVE THE SECOND BOOK YES), and I regret not reading a physical copy. I also have seen it on the summer reading shelf in the library so in other words it must be good because middle schoolers and high schoolers are reading it. Bam. Just kidding it probably doesn't mean much haha. BUT STILL. If you're looking for a good fantasy series to start that focuses on dragons, this is a good one! It really is an interesting take on dragons!

I read this last month and gave it 3.5 stars as well! I loved the world building and all the characters but at times it was too slow and I was, I don't know, I was expecting more dragons actually. Like, real dragons.
But still, I want to read Shadow Scale, so we'll see :)

FREE DRAGON. Eating heads. Can't get better than that!! :) Wonderful book it seems! (whoa I just talked like yoda) Review is great it is.(YODA)

I can definitely understand how the audiobook would be a problem with this book; I had a hard time keeping things straight and I was reading it with my eyes (then I learned after the fact that there was a useful glossary and list of characters in the back that I could have referred to!). And yes, the mental garden was a little... different... but I like how it ended up tying in with the larger story. AND LUCIAN KIGGS. I ship that so hard.

I'm not a huge fan of audiobooks, either, because I tend to zone out, which makes everything so confusing. Seraphina is definitely not suited for an audiobook. The story and the world is so complicated that I think I would have so much trouble understanding it if I was listening to it. I loved all the themes in the book and that huge twist at the end, so I ultimately rated Seraphina 4.5 stars. I just loved it a lot. The mental garden was extremely weird, though...I mean, a lot of the aspects of the book were weird...

I'M SO SAD THIS DIDN'T WORK AS WELL FOR YOU BECAUSE OF THE AUDIOBOOK VAL. ;___; It is a pretty weird book. The mental garden stuff is bizarre, but really cool! But I can definitely see how it would be really confusing in audiobook form because so much stuff is just going on in her mind and all the flashbacks and stuff. It's a pretty complicated book, and there are a lot of unfamiliar words as well. But I can't wait to hear what you make of Shadow Scale!

I loved this book! However, I listened to it on audio book too and I agree. I found it a bit confusing. I ended up snagging a paper copy from my sister and that really helped. In particular, I really loved the stuff with the saints/religion. I found the world building fascinating!

Can't wait for the second one!

I have the same problems with audiobooks - I like being able to stop and reread a paragraph if I want to, or stop and think for a while without having to fumble around looking for the pause button!
I own the paperback, and it's been sitting on my bookshelf forever! It sounds really good, though. I definitely need to read it soon :) Sorry you didn't like the audiobook more, Val, but YAY that you'll continue with the series :D

I don't think audiobooks and I would mix very well. I would probably wander off in the middle of it, forgetting I'd ever started it. Plus, my daughter does not ever stop talking (don't worry, she gets it from me) so I'd never be able to hear over her anyway.

Does she have some kind of psychosis? Why does she have to maintain a mental garden? I am really confused by that. Is she hallucinating dragons? I don't know, I don't think this one is for me. The multitude of characters, and the possible dragons or hallucinations or acid trips... meh. I am glad you liked it though!

Oooh dragons?! I am curious. I've seen this one around so much but I've never really paid attention to what it's about LOL. Now, I need to land my hands on this one because did someone mention ship? I NEED THIS.

This probably is the first 3.5-star review I've seen for this book, haha. Seriously though, just everyone seems to LOVE this book. And even though I wasn't originally too interested in this (I don't know, the blurb just makes the story sound so strange because dragons who can shift into humans and hold court? LOL), I did think that I would have liked it a lot, too. NOW, I'M NOT SURE. THANKS FOR MAKING ME EVEN MORE INDECISIVE, VAL.

^ Just kidding, you know I love you.

Good world-building is one of my musts for fantasy books. Otherwise I'm just not going to be pulled into your fantasy world and that will cause a LOT of problems. *cough*Kiss of Deception*cough* So I'm really happy to hear that the world building here was full of detail. I'm only hoping that it wasn't too much of an infodump though, because that's not good as well. >< I'm thinking it must have been hard to keep track of all the world building while listening to an audio and doing something else, too. O_O

And um, wow. Seraphina. Mental gardens are nice and all, but not when they're an actual condition. I don't really know what to picture, haha, but it's a... cool idea? Tbh she's starting to sound a little crazy to me. ESPECIALLY SINCE PEOPLE LIVE IN THAT MENTAL GARDEN OF HERS. Grosses me out a little, I'm sorry.

Oh man, I hate it when authors introduce character after character. I'm reading a manga called Monster by Urasawa Naoki and maaaan, it's like he introduces a new character every other chapter. Not to mention, the story is set in Germany, so of course that makes things even more complicated with complicated German names. What's worse is that these characters are so minor that they probably appear in one chapter, and then are never seen again, but their names are still mentioned in other chapters and I'm left here thinking, "Who the hell is that?" Yeah, not the best feeling in the world. T_T

Overall, it still sounds really interesting and it's definitely something I want to read in the future. Maybe not now though, lol, because I swear my attention span has been getting shorter and shorter. Ugh.

All of your rants about audiobooks are the reasons that I haven't tried them yet. I just don't think I will pay attention.

Anyways, sorry that this one was just ok for you, it just moved down the priority list.
Thanks for the honest review!

I originally started out on audio book with this as well and then had to finish it in print because yes so much going on. I really enjoyed the narrator but I think it had two? I can't remember but it was much better in print for me. Sorry you didn't enjoy it as much.

I have heard SO many different things about this book, and not all of them have been that great. :/ It sucks that you didn't enjoy it as much as you were hoping, especially since FRICK YEAH DRAGONS. Why are there not more awesome dragon books out there? I know there's Talon but I heard so many iffy things about that one too! Just make awesome dragon books, please. I promise they're cool. D:

Audiobooks are not my forte, and I tend to not like them. Although I suppose it'd help with pronunciation in fantasy. XD

Hmm I was actually planning to listen to the audiobook soon hah. I am actually really glad I read this review when I did, I am going to force myself to pay super close attention and hopefully I'll catch everything and if not, I'll just suck it up and read it. I know EXACTLY what you mean though when you mention the difficulties of listening to a book rather than reading it. ANYWAY, the mental garden in the head does sound really weird and I probably would have thought the same thing you did so thanks for the heads up. I think I'm rambling at this point but your review was very helpful! I am both excited and nervous to read this book hah.

Is it just me that I can't go reading past that cute owl and her cute googly eyes. :)
Audiobooks do not work for me too. I can listen only to very light and fluffy books that are not complex. Seraphina is a book with some intricate details that builds all relationships and characters slowly, but I liked it.
And haha about the mental garden. It sounds weird when we talk about it now, but I remember it made perfect sense when I read about it. :D

I read this a few years ago and I think I already forgot the story. The sequel is coming up this year though so I'm gonna read it again before diving into the sequel. Seraphina started out so slow to me but when the story get's better, you can't stop reading it anymore. I ship Prince Lucien and Seraphina too. I like that the romance is slow and subtle. It makes you crave for more!
1. I forgive you ;-) 2. Yeah Seraphina's brain is definitely very very weird but I love weird so it worked for me, ha. Are you planning on jumping right into Shadow Scale?
