Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Simon can’t even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can’t stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. When you’re the most powerful magician the world has ever known, you never get to relax and savor anything.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from ARC may or may not be in the published edition.

I was really looking forward to Carry On. And I think I very much hyped it up in my head because this was not really what I expected at all. And sure, I know that Rainbow Rowell mainly writes contemporary and not fantasy, but I don't know. Maybe I expected more because of how I liked her other books.

Anyways, here is where I stand on Rainbow Rowell books rating wise:

Isn't it funny how I loved Fangirl, but not the story that came out from it? Ah well.

Carry On, as said, is the story of Baz and Simon written by the main character, Cath, from Fangirl. It's made to be similar to Harry Potter, or more like the Harry Potter fandom. Even from the start, I knew that Carry On would be neither original nor as amazing when it came to world building. But honestly, I kind of expected more than what I was given. For example, I wasn't satisfied with the way the magic worked, which was in rhymes. Basically you can create your own spell with rhymes or songs, but what are the limitations? Sure, maybe it's not relevant to the plot, but I would have liked to know more.

And then there's the assumption that the reader knows everything about Baz and Simon and their school, and previous years have been reduced to one sentence summaries. I get that this is technically supposed to be "fanfiction" (written by Cath), and maybe it's just me, but what is the point of including knowledge from past years if it's not going to be expanded on? It was like I was thrown into this new world, with the expectation that I knew Harry Potter and the assumption that I didn't need much info at all.

Really the one and only thing I really liked about Carry On was Simon and Baz, and of course their relationship. It was mostly a one sided relationship, with Baz wondering why he loved Simon so much. But for me, it was enough to keep reading on. Plus I was surprised by the addition of vampires, which I admit added some depth to the story.

OMG THIS IS PERFECT CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND THIS GIF LOL

Looking back, I can admit that the plot was pretty unique in a way, even though I guess what would happen halfway through. I feel like I am being slightly harsh on this book, but it's probably due to me putting such high expectations on it.

I think that with the spells they can be any common saying, so the more often they're said (by normal people) the better the spell works. I quite liked this aspect. I also LOVED the romance! The main plot not so much and I wasn't pleased with the ending. (I sort of added an epilogue in my head that ended how I wanted it.)

I still haven't read Fangirl! I've heard I need to, but I'm not really a contemporary girl. Although she had me giggling with the love story in Carry On and that's so not like me!

Ah I see. That is quite an interesting take on it hahaha! I agree with you! I loved the romance and just the interactions between the characters, but not the plot. I think I should have expected this from the author because characters is what she excels at!

Maybe you'll like it hahah!
Yeah I wasn't really a fan of this either. I absolutely loved Fangirl, but this paled in comparison. And I totally agree that the relationship was primarily one-sided. I was so confused when they got together and Simon didn't really question it.

Yeah same here! The end was pretty rushed too, hence the quick getting together part haha.
This book has basically been sitting on my shelf for so long, and I still haven't read it. I've only heard great things so far, but there's something that makes this book so unappealing to me. I don't know why. I'm glad to see a review that didn't rave on and on about how good it was though, and I enjoyed reading yours as well.

Thank you! Yeah I waited a really long time before reading this. I should have known that as a huge fantasy reader, I wouldn't have the best time with it. So many of my friends liked it thought argh!

Hahahah it was for me :D
It sounds like the execution in this story was poor - I love the idea of it being the fanfiction written by Cath, but not to the point where us actual readers in the real actual world have no idea what's going on.

Yep that was basically my thoughts overall. I think you just had to assume that the reader (us) are very familiar with Harry Potter, since that is what this is based off of.
I had the same issue with Fangirl actually, I just couldn't get into the Fanfiction sections. It sounds like it was written for readers who have read and loved every word. I don't think this would be my thing though. I'm not a massive fan of RR, but it sounds like this was more about making money off the success of Fangirl than storywriting sadly. Sorry you couldn't have enjoyed this more Val and I hope it doesn't ruin your love for Fangirl. Wonderful review <3

I'm pretty sure I skipped over the fanfiction part of it as well. Or just didn't read it fully. I also read Fangirl 3 years ago, so I'm sure my thoughts have changed. I could see that, I think Rowell also wanted to appease all her fans. Because when this was first announce, everyone was so excited. Thank you Kelly!
I was pretty unsure when I read Carry On as well, I mean, I liked it well enough. I was kind of just confused about it, I felt like there wasn't enough information to back everything up. I like Simon and Baz and I like where Rainbow Rowell was going with this. It just felt a little bit off. Great review though!

I'm glad we had the same thoughts! I kept second guessing myself, like maybe I just wasn't paying attention to the world building. But it's nice knowing someone else also thought there wasn't enough info. Thank you Brooklyn!
This book definitely seems to have been divisive for Rowell fans. I had a lot of laughs from the people who loved Fangirl but skimmed the fanfiction parts and then picked up Carry On and (not that surprisingly) didn't enjoy it. I could have sworn that Baz was a vampire in Fangirl but maybe I'm making that up. Thanks for the review!
