From Colleen Houck, New York Times bestselling author of The Tiger’s Curse, comes Recreated, the second book in the epic Egyptian-inspired Reawakened series, in which a seventeen-year-old must literally go to hell to save the love of her life.

Lily Young thought traveling across the globe with a reawakened sun prince was a grand adventure. Now she’s about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.

When Amon and Lily part tragically, he transports himself to the Netherworld—what mortals call hell. Tormented by the loss of his one true love, he’d rather suffer in agony during Lily’s mortal years than fulfill his duty to protect humanity.

Heartbroken, Lily seeks refuge on her grandmother’s farm. Yet she can feel Amon’s pain, and she has been having dreams—dreams of Amon continually suffering.

For before he departed, Amon gave Lily something very special, an item that connects them even though they are worlds apart. Now Lily must use this object to free him, and to free their realms from darkness and utter chaos. She will do whatever it takes.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from ARC may or may not be in the published edition.

Why.

Why did I do this to myself? How could I put myself through reading this book? Yes, I did like the first book, Reawakened, but then after some reflection, I realized how much I didn't like it. A year later, when I thought I had forgotten about what bothered me in Reawakened, I picked up this sequel. And well, I was wrong. For me, it was much worse.

I'm going to say there will be spoilers in this review, but that is to be on the safe side. Sure this is the second book in the series, but honestly I'm not going to talk much about what happens. Because that's how much I do not care. (My reviews have been incredibly salty as of late, haven't they? Sorry bout that)

First off, to describe this books as a whole, I would say it's info dumping at it's worst. Dialogue upon dialogue of info, lectures, whatever about Egyptian mythology. And I love Egyptian mythology. But honestly at that moment I would have picked up a nonfiction book on the topic. That is how bored I was with Recreated.

Here is one book that revolves around Egyptian culture, and is overall just better in general. Presenting Mara, Daughter of the Nile. You're welcome.

Not only is there barely any action in this (just more of the talking, going places, something happens, more info dumping), but about every single guy falls for Lily. And you know why that is the case? Well let's say our heroine has in her possession this "heart scarab" that makes it so any male attracted to her, unless they are in love with someone else. Why. What is the point of this. Please explain. We barely get any scenes with both her and Amon, the actual love interest. Instead we spend a good time seeing Horus head over heels in "love" with Lily, trying to kiss her or seduce her or whatever. I skimmed as best as I could.

Really, the only thing I actually liked about this book is the addition of Tia, the lioness. With her merging with Lily to become a sphinx, it made the character interactions much more interesting. How would you like it if you were inhabiting another person's body, trying not to take it over?

But other than that. Meh. MEH. Why did I even bother?

I have zero interest in this series (it's one of the instances where reading one bad book by an author turns me off to all of her other work), so I went ahead and read the spoilers. It sucks that you were so bored with the info dumping, though the review turned out entertaining to read! :D

Hahah I read bad books just to write entertaining reviews! Just kidding. But yeah I highly second you skipping. Was your first book by her The Tiger's Curse? Because that sounds rough.
I liked the first book but I heard about what happens in this one and no thanks. I hate when authors ruin their own series...

I liked the first book too, I mean after some reflection it wasn't as good as I thought, but the Egyptian mythology made it worth it. But in this one, that didn't even make up for how bad this was!
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry you didn't like this book!
I'm not a huge fan of Egyptian mythology (I never found a book on it that made me interested in it) - but I hope you'll find an interesting one soon!
Apparently the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan are really good?

It's really hard to find a book that is good AND have Egyptian mythology, so I am not surprised at all that you didn't find anything interesting. I have yet to read anything by Rick Riordan! I might one day :)
Yikes. EVERYBODY fell for her? Sounds a bit much. Honestly, her debut series left me frustrated so I barely gave this new one a glance. Sounds like I'm not missing much.

You're really missing absolutely nothing. Apparently this series, from what I heard, is exactly like her debut series!
Well, this sounds like a mess. Like, dudes are just throwing each other at this girl? ALL the dudes? What about single women who are attracted to women? This kind of seems rude to exclude them. Though, they're probably really glad not to be part of this shitshow anyway, so... Also, I hate this cover. It looks like baby food. And like, no thanks. I also don't think I care enough about Egyptian mythology for a 416 page lecture, complete with Special Snowflake© protagonist so... HARD PASS on this series. I love your salty reviews though Val. I won't lie, I get pretty excited when you write one :*

IT IS A MESS MOM! Yes every single dude. AND GUESs WHAT. NONE OF THE SINGLE WOMEN WERE ATTRACTED TO HER. Like what kind of one gendered mess is this. Basically all for freaking fan service and it made me MAD. HAHAHAH baby food. Are you drunk right now?

I'm glad you love my salty reviews :)
I barely made it through the author's other book, Tiger's Curse, so I am pretty hesitant about reading anything else by her. Unfortunately, it seems like the problems I had with Tiger's Curse are present in this one as well - especially with the info dumping and lack of action. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

You're welcome. Just a heads up that this series is apparently exactly the same as The Tiger's Curse (just the setting is switched really?) so I highly suggest skipping on this!

This sounds like it totally sucks. You know what, Val? I'm done too and I haven't even started. Lol!

HAHAHAH yeah don't even bother!
It honestly sounds horrendous. The quickest way to a DNF for me is an overload of information. I love books based on mythology, but I don't think there's any need to give readers a history lesson. You can take far more in as the storyline progresses and makes me wonder if it's the author just trying to be clever or a bit pretentious actually. The romance sounds like the Premonition series by Amy Bartol. Oh my goodness, it was like a love hexagon and every time she met a new 'angel' all their wings would SNAP out suddenly like HERE IS MY ANGELIC HARD ON. Don't read that one either. Terrible.

Doesn't it? I feel like this author goes overboard with the research. The best kind of book is when everything is integrated in the story, so much that it doesn't even seem like info dumping. Sadly this was not the case. LOL WHAT. WINGS SNAPPING COUNTED AS HARD ONS? WHAT IS IT. I promise I will not read that :D
Oh man, wasn't this installment terribad? I mean, Lily flirting with every single guy thing was my main concern, but yeah the info dumping and everything was so frustrating.
