For eighteen-year-old Gideon Blake, nothing but death can keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. As it turns out, it does.

Recovering from the accident that most definitely killed him, Gideon finds himself with strange new powers and a bizarre cuff he can't remove. His death has brought to life his real destiny. He has become War, one of the legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence.

They fail.

Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he's fallen for--not to mention all of humankind--he needs to convince the skeptical government officials the world is in imminent danger.

But will anyone believe him?

I think it is safe to say that this was on a lot of readers' most anticipated for 2016, am I right? Although I wasn't super interested, I still couldn't resist not reading it once I saw it on Shannon's bookshelf. You know, when I visited. And stole all her books. No regrets.

Except, maybe I do regret reading this, just a little. To be honest, I thought this would take a completely different route plot-wise. When I was younger, I was totally into the whole "government takes control and kidnaps you because you have powers" phase when I was younger (Yes I was very specific back in the day), so no surprise, I wanted to read Riders. But, it just didn't go the way I wanted to. And along with that, there were a couple of flaws I just could not overlook.

So let's see, horsemen. Gideon is our hot-headed main character, and surprise, he's the personification of War? Oh sorry, legendary horseman. And then there is also Famine, Death, and Conquest. And then there is this mysterious girl that brings them all together because she knows something they don't. And all four of them have to basically save the world from, demons?

Should I just list these all out? Gah.

First off, there was just a lot to pack into one book. Sure, I may have gotten to know Gideon, seeing that he is our main character after all, but there is also this huge road trip that involves getting all the other characters together. And the book just skipped over the characterization of both Jode and Marcus, because they were the last to be "collected". And there just wasn't enough "book"-time for them.

Second, I have never read Under A Never Sky, and I have been told it is a lot better, but the writing style in this is all telling. And yes, I get it, Gideon is retelling his story to the authorities, but could it have been told better? And not just all tell tell tell? And don't even get me started on this love interest, what's-her-name, oh it's Daryn. She's trying to be all mysterious and keeping secrets so the demons (??) don't figure it out, but there was definitely a better way around the whole mind-reading trick the demons do. Like, lying? Lying is great! But just being non-communicative and leaving everyone in the dark? That never works. Which I assume is the point for their to be a plot, I suppose.

Oh, and I WANTED A GIRL HORSEMAN. HORSEWOMAN. Did they all have to be guys? DID THEY? Was this based off of something? Maybe I am just being ignorant. Then again, this is fiction. And I deserve a horsewoman.

Lastly (I promise), the ending involved all the characters brushing off everything that happened. [spoilers, highlight to read] All the authorities believed them in the end, so easily, GIDEON HAD HIS HAND CUT OFF, and he was like "oh there goes my hand!". And then Sebastian disappears into some sort of creepy portal, and everyone's like, "let's enlist for the army!" [spoiler]. And I'm just sitting here like, "Did you NOT PROCESS EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED? Gah.

To sum it up, the more I thought about Riders, the less I liked it. My rating dropped from a 3.5 to a 2.5 the more I discussed it with others. I feel bad, I really do, but again, maybe this is just a me thing.

Also, thank you to Holly @ The Fox's Hideaway for discussing this with me back in December, because she helped me actually remember the story and what happened, what I did not like. She's a trooper. She will have her own review of Riders posted on her own blog, at some point today!

Gahhh! I was so excited for this one too D: but from the sounds of it I'll probably not enjoy it either. I'm not a huge fan of all tell, no show. And you're right, there should have been a horsewoman! I'll still try it out, but my expectations have dropped. Lovely review!

Yeah I really want to see what you think! I don't know if it would be better if it were in a different writing style, maybe? But I think something could have been done better! Thank you Kynndra! We all deserve horsewomen
I've been seeing so many mixed reviews on this one, so I'm sorry to hear it wasn't your thing Val. :( I can completely see where you're coming from though - I'm not a fan of books that try to pack too much into one book. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous review! <3

Same here! I feel like with every review I read, I see more flaws. Thank you Zoe!
I feel bad to say this, but Veronica Rossi's work has never really appealed to me. So disappointing there's not ONE girl horsewoman. Like omg. I love the name Gideon, though. It sounds a little like a dystopian version of Under The Painted Sky. Wonderful review!

Really? I have always been hesitant with trying her other books! I also love the name Gideon! It really fits his character, to be honest! Thank you Peach!
Damn you Rossi *shakes fist*

This is one of my more anticipated reads, or was sadly. I loved her Under The Never Sky series, it was one of those dystopians that really resurrected the genre from the same old shit. But this sounds so incredibly busy and doesn't allow the reader to really connect with any one part. Are the horsemen based on the four horseman of the apocalypse? Reminds me a little of Blood Red Road, but without the awesome. I still want to give it a read, but will wait until a lot of the hype dies down. Sorry you couldn't have enjoyed this more Val, but no doubt Shannon has better books for you to steal :D Fabulous review <3

*shakes fist with you*

I've really heard good things about Under The Never Sky, yet I feel like now I will hesitate because of this book. Sadness. And yes the horsemen are based on the four horseman of the apocalypse, and this was the first I had heard of it (I know, I am pretty ignorant of these things sometimes). I think you should still read it! It would be interesting to see what you think! And yes, I plan to steal all the books from Shannon next time :)
Aw I'm sad to hear this was a disappointment. I've read Under The Never Sky and it was so, so good. But this one really doesn't sound that good. I mean, not ONE girl horsewoman?? C'mon. And all just telling? I think I might just skip out on this one or it won't be on my priority to-read list, at least. Great review! <3

I've heard really good things about Under the Never Sky, so I was really surprised that I didn't like this at all! Thank you Cari :)
I've actually read a few reviews of this one and I still don't really know what it's about. Gideon sounds really interesting, especially as a horseman, but I mean it doesn't sound like the world building was done all that well if it doesn't really make sense. Hey, at least the demons remind me of supernatural! Lovely review Val!

Hahahah thank you Jeann! Yeah I wish there was more world building and character development! I think that would have definitely made up for the writing style, at least for me!
Well CRAP. I knew you would point out something that would remind me "oh wait, yes, that WAS freaking stupid". And you did. The spoiler section was just WHAT!? I think I was really tired though when I finished so I wasn't as ragey as I would have been. Also, I hadn't thought of it, but YES to the horsewoman! WHY was there no horsewoman!? Maybe that will be explained better in the next book? ::shrugs::

Also, Under the Never Sky is only infinitely better. For real. And it is NOT telling, I promise!

HAHAHAH I KNOW THOUGH RIGHT. Like I'm pretty sure I summed up the ending really well, which isn't a good thing I think? And no I was like that when I finished the book that morning in your room (lol). But then after a while I was just like, nah. AND YEAH IT WOULD'VE BEEN SO COOL. I'm not holding it against the author or anything, but I would've liked a horsewoman.

OK I BELIEVE YOU. Are you gonna read Seeker? Probably right?
Ah, no. I didn't even know what this book was about until recently, and then because it shared some similarities with the Sleepy Hollow show, I decided to give it a go. And now I don't know if I will D:

I don't really like the sound of the writing being all telling, and the Daryn character ... I don't think I will warm to her at all. The beautiful and mysterious stranger, or whatever.

Also, I find it super weird that the four horsemen, WHOSE JOB IT IS TO BRING ABOUT THE END OF DAYS would care about destroying demons? Demons wreak havoc, as well. So they would be friends. So I'm not so sure if I would like these COMPLETE role reversal of the four horsemen O.o

Thanks for the review, lovely!

After watching the first episode of Sleepy Hollow, I get it! Maybe if I watched the show first I would've liked Riders? Though probably not lol.

Yeah that was my view on Daryn. She was just there to be mysterious and beautiful or whatever. Like I get it. LOL I DON'T KNOW CHIARA I DON'T KNOW. I really know nothing about the horsemen and I don't know what exactly they are doing LOL.

You're welcome Chiara! You're comment is really enlightening in regards to the horsemen of the apocalypse. :)
I'm like the sole person in this world who DNF'd Under the Never Sky because I could NOT get into it. So needless to say, based on your review I don't think Riders is for me either.

Ah really? Then it probably isn't either if you don't like tell not show! Although it could be said that you might like Riders because you didn't like Under the Never Sky? Hahaha.
Well it would depend on the characters. The characters were 97% of the reason why I stopped reading Under the Never Sky.

So I never did post Riders the day you did. Whoops. also I'm not actually surprised you dropped your rating. I did like the telling part of the story, but it got OLD after awhile and I wanted there to be more action and showing. And then, yeah, like no one cared that shit happened in the end and they all just went on with their lives like NBD?? Not very believable. I did enjoy it, as you know, but time gave me new perspective and it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Esp since I've read the Under the Never Sky series and that one IS SO FREAKING GREAT. I hope you try it.

Are you going to read SEEKER?

LOL that's okay. Yes yes yes it did get really old, and I just really wasn't invested in the story. AND THE ENDING WAS like why. Did you not just go through all of that? Ugh. But yeah, I think this is definitely one of those books where you realize more and more how it wasn't good :(

I WILL TRY IT YES. OK. And I don't know. I haven't decided whether I want to read Seeker yet or not.
Okay so first of all THANK YOU for sharing that spoiler because now I know I cannot under any circumstances read this book. (Not that I had been super on board after hearing very little in the way of high praise.)

Second: If you can find a copy, I'd check out Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler. I haven't read it so I can't speak to quality but it starts another Four Horsemen series but in this one the MC is a girl who is anorexic and appointed as Famine.

Third: Kirkus has one of the best critical reviews I have ever read for this title and you should check it out.

Wow you have guts to highlight the spoilers! But yes it is NOT something you would want to read, I think. It was a little, gruesome. Even though it wasn't that detailed, it just happening was really gross.

Ohhhh that sounds really good! I will have to check it out, especially since I deserve a horsewoman.

I read the Kirkus review right when I read your comment, and it is A+++
