Laia is a slave.

Elias is a soldier.

Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Well what do you know? I actually ended up reading An Ember in the Ashes! I bought it right when it came out, and just now I have read and loved it. Of course, it isn't without its flaws, and it doesn't completely live up to my expectations.

Is it instalove? I think yes.

Or at least insta-attraction, which I do understand, so I feel like a hypocrite for saying this. But let me back up, we have Laia, a slave girl who is actually working for the Resistance. And then we have Elias, who is kind of a sympathizer to the slaves and such. And just to everyone actually. He's not a heartless "mask" like everyone at Blackcliff, the military academy.

Though really, their meeting is basically "eyes meeting, guy thinks girl is beautiful, girl looks away and is confused" and it transitions to "guy tries to help out girl because he can't stop thinking about her". To be honest, I feel like the book would've been better off without their attraction.

Inspired by Ancient Rome? Uh eh.

For one, I could've sworn this was based off of Greek or Roman culture, but that's not really the case here. Actually, I couldn't help but notice a lot of similarities between this and Red Rising. For one, there's an oppressed group of people, the main character is a spy, the situation itself is bleak, but in the end everything pulls through.

Honestly, during some points in the novel I could not keep reading because the bleakness of the situation was really putting me off. The Commandment makes Queen Levana from The Lunar Chronicles seem like nothing.

  But I was still intrigued!

The first half of the novel was boring compared to the action in the end, which involved darker forces besides slavery and the trials to become Emperor. Which is why I would read the next book for all my answers.

I feel like after many months in anticipation, this definitely falls flat for me. I was expecting more worldbuilding, based on Ancient Rome, and even though there were ghouls and sand efrits, but I felt that came out of nowhere, and didn't really fit in with the setting. Also, rape is mentioned a couple of times, and I know some readers have been put off by that as well.

In conclusion, I liked An Ember in the Ashes. I think readers who loved Red Rising would definitely enjoy this, because it's along the same lines plot-wise.

I want to read this one but I guess I'm having some doubts. I think I'll borrow this one, in the near future. Great review, Val!

I actually really enjoyed this one too Val, to the point where the instant love / love square barely annoyed me even. It was definitely the world building though, rather than the characters themselves. I loved the second half when the action picked up and only wish it had been introduced sooner. Looking forward to book two as well for answers. Even though I hated Red Rising, I loved this. Go figure. Fabulous review Val <3

Okay before books I must ask a very important question. For science.

What is that Reynolds gif from??

Books. Yes. I also bought this book when it was released and continue to put it off. I should make it a goal to get to it by the end of the year… But I’m just concerned I won’t love it!

Hmm I still haven't decided on this one yet. I don't think the plot really interests me, but I've heard such great things about it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't sure of the supernatural elements. I think the book would be much more solid if it excluded that particular element. It often left me confused and not in a good way.

This book was just missing that little something to blow me away. I'm glad the last half was faster and I'm hoping the sequel will build on that.

Great review!

I'm so confused about this book, because some people haven't really liked it at all, and some people have LOVED it. I do want to read it, but I also have a kind of feeling that I wouldn't really mind if I didn't ever actually get to it. Which is kind of horrible, but there are SO MANY books to read, I feel like I have to be a bit picky sometimes when it comes to picking which ones will take up my reading time. And this one has aspects that I just don't know if I would be on, or not.

Either way, I'm glad you seemed to enjoy it overall, even if there were aspects that you weren't super fond of.

As always, lovely review, Valerie <3

I haven't bought this, or read this, but I've heard raving review all over place. Even though you didn't like it as much as everyone else, I'm so glad you liked it, VAL! :D

I completely agree with everything you've said here Val. This was definitely an intriguing and entertaining tale - no doubt about it - but the romance felt so forced and contrived to me. Like, was the love pentagon / square / whatever it was really necessary? And instalove on top of that? *shakes head sadly* But I'm definitely curious to see what happens next, and am glad you feel the same way. Thanks for sharing and fabulous review! <3

This was a flat read for me, too! I just didn't feel the emotion or the trepidation or the urgency that was supposed to be there. It's probably the writing for me that got me to feel that way because I didn't really feel anything for it. I do agree that we could've gone without the insta-love/insta-attraction/love square.

Ah, this book. I felt that the beginning was so, so boring and I didn't care much for either character, and while the action picked up about 35-40% through, I still just didn't care that much. I agree that this would've been better without the attraction! It felt so weird to me. One second Laia is thinking about the resistance guy (I seriously cannot remember his name), and the next she's dancing with Elias and talking about how ~sexy~ he is. I was like...yeah, I like this scene, but what the hell?! So I just didn't care for the romance (*cough* insta-attraction) at all. To be honest, I would've much preferred Laia and Elias as friends with their respective love interests, or as singular love interests with their respective friends/allies. I felt the romances made this weird square thing.

Also, the Roman influences? Yeah, didn't see them. And so much of the world wasn't even explained. The Masks were hardly discussed and I was REALLY intrigued in the science behind the physical masks they wore. And then there was just all of the political stuff that I was interested in knowing and was left completely unmentioned. I guess that bit fell so, so flat for me. :(

I gave this book 4 stars originally because I felt it had a strong enough ending, but after a lot of thought I decided it was more of a 3 star because I liked it but didn't love it. I'll probably read the second book for continuity's sake, but that's it.

I truly detest instalove, when Elias and Laia met my eyes nearly rolled out of my head. I am championing for Helene and happiness myself. I'm glad that you still found some aspects you liked about the book, though!

Although I AM excited to give this a try, I have a feeling it's not going to be as brilliant a read for me as I've been hoping. I'm still going to go into it and try not to expect anything, good or bad, but I think it might be a bit dark for my tastes, from what I've heard. Sorry that overall it wasn't fantastic for you, Val. I am keen to try Red Rising, too! Hopefully they're both at least enjoyable.
xx

Yessss I loved Red Rising! I kind of found like this one needed more world building as well, especially with the Ifrits and stuff, while I liked them, it just raises the question of where they came from and is this a fantasy world. I have to say I wasn't convinced on their romance either - I liked Elias with Helene! Great review Val :)

This was a complete dud for me. I disliked it so much, I couldn't bear to write a review for it.
