How To Survive A Book Buying Ban

I've realized that I have been writing and posting way too many reviews in a row (who AM I??), yet this post that I was supposed to write in January just never happened. So here I am, with non-review post. Sorry for the delay.

Anyways, this year, I am greatly limiting the number of books bought. I think. Or at least I'll try to. And so in this post, I'll be sharing tips on how I resist the temptation to buy books. And survive the book buying ban.

1. Buy or preorder only the books that you desperately need
Let's be honest, how many books do you buy that just sit on your shelf, collecting dust? A LOT. So stop! I know, easier said than done. But no you don't need the book with the pretty cover if you're not interested in actually reading it.

2. Stick to bargain books and deals
Wait for the deals! I guarantee that a book will show up on Book Outlet or as a Kindle deal at some point! So if you only kind of want to read a book, then maybe wait for a lower price, or find it in the bargain section of your bookstore.

3. Buy used!
If you don't care about a book's condition, buy used! Especially if it's a book that is on your TBR, but doesn't have the best-looking cover, or you just couldn't care less about. Just last year, I wanted to own the entire Mediator series by Meg Cabot, but they were a bit expensive on Amazon. I found the whole series on the used books shelf of my local bookstore, all 6 for only $15! And the books barely looked used, it was great.

4. Remember that you have a ton of unread books
Sometimes I just have to remember that I have a bunch of books on my shelves that I haven't read yet. And also all the kindle books too.

5. Make your friends send you books
I made Shannon send me some books that she was unhauling, AND THEY ARE NOW MINE. It's also great because I'm technically helping her make space in her room, while getting something in return.

6. Borrow books!
I really need to utilize the town library, because they stock up on SO MANY new YA releases. I am so spoiled. I also borrow a lot of adult books too, because those tend to be much more expensive than YA books. And I don't care about owning physical copies of adult books as much as YA ones.

7. Give up and buy all the books anyways?
JUST KIDDING HOW COULD I POSSIBLY SURVIVE? I guess we'll see how I do by the end of the year. Womp womp.

Have you ever done a book buying ban? What tips do you have to get through it?

Yeah I KNOW.

even though you live hours away. I just cannot believe
I go through periods where I have to reduce myself to one book per fortnight when I'm in desperate need of a clean out. This year I'm trying to only read what's on my shelves because it's reached a point where it's out of control. I have zero shelf space and the triple stacking are starting to make them sag.

I need help. You right, I totally need more books :D

You definitely DO NEED MORE BOOKS. Book buying ban? Yeah nooooo. Hahahha.

I haven't gotten to the point where I need to triple stack, but it's getting there :D
Buying used books is a good idea. I bought one for the first time last year, it was like new! ( except for the sticker that I still haven't figure out how to remove on the spine. why on the spine? why! 😡 )

I'm trying something new this year to avoid sacrificing too many books to the demon abibliophobia and well, dust. I read the Kindle version, then if I really, really liked it, I buy the physical book! It still saves me money, e-books being way cheaper.

Wow I've never seen it on the spine. Maybe you could look up some tips on how to remove the sticker? But yes I also have found great deals on used or bargain books that look almost new!

Yes I'm the same way! If I loved the ebook version, there's a good chance I'll buy a physical copy! (most likely on sale though!)
Yeah, I'm going to look up for tips. I'm so scared to remove it, though. 🙈 I still don't understand why they keep putting stickers on books seriously. 🙄

Physical books are still my favorite, but I'd rather buy only books I really liked. Money doesn't grow on trees, so.
I've been buying books, not nearly as many as i possibly can. But with all the books we have on our shelves, me especially. I don't need to buy any books.

Yep I definitely don't need any new books haha.
Oh I am bad at bans. I do stick with BookOutlet and kindle sales so at least it isn't as much $$!!

Same here! I think I really only buy books from BookOutlet during the Black Friday sale, so it's not TOO much. And I think my max $$ is around $40 :D
Your last point... yep... I totally didn't buy a single book for five years... and then I was like nope I'm done I'm buying what I like... granted I still read many from the library to see if it's worth buying my own copy.

Hahah yes! I was definitely the same way when I got a job and was able to buy a couple books a month!
"Shannon" really is the best cure. I have so many books, send all the people to my stacks. I need to get those books to you, too, speaking of. Anyyyyway. I never MADE myself do a ban, because I think I would fail just due to wanting what I can't have? But I have been REALLY good about it. Last year I only bought like, 25 books, which is quite good I think! This year I have bought... 3 so far I think? So that is really not bad!

IT REALLY IS. I cannot wait to get my package! Woooo. AND YOU'VE SENT MY BOOKS NOW, RIGHT?? And honestly that is REALLY not bad! I'm kind of about to break my ban to buy pretty much all the Saga books, BUT NO SHAME.
I'm definitely the person who does the last one. I start with buying one I absolutely need and then I end up with twenty new books and no idea how it happened. Even buying used doesn't totally work for me because I end up buying ten used books because they're so cheap and if I'm gonna do it I might as well crazy. The only way my bans work is if I speak to no one and browse no new books and basically become a recluse. I just need to go on a reading holiday I think so I can get through a few of the books on my shelves.

YEP. And yes I definitely think that's the ultimate solution. Just don't discover new books, and then you'll never be pressured to read them :D
This is such a great post, I love all of your tips <3 I haven't really done a big book buying ban... I do one every single time I get new books, ahah. I always try and wait until I'm down to, two physical - or e-books - to read (meaning: I own already and ready to be read) before getting new books, so... whenever I get new books, I get automatically on a book buying ban, haha.
I always watch out for every deal I can get online though, when it comes to books, and YES for sharing books with friends - wish I could do that more often, I'm trying though, even if shipping costs aren't that cheap sometimes ahah :)
Great post!! :)

I'M JUST HALF JEALOUS THAT YOU HAVE READ MOST OF YOUR BOOKS! I'm actually aiming to do that this year, so maybe I will catch up with you? Who knows. Though there are a couple really long books I own that I don't really feeling like reading. Oh well.

And SO ANNOYING about shipping costs. It's so cheap for book mail in the US, that it makes me mad when it's super expensive everywhere else/INTL.
book buying ban = excuse to buy more books later

YOU FOUND ME OUT
These tips are all the ones I use to survive a book buying ban! I thought I'd be good this year and not buy books unless absolutely necessary, but I have already failed dramatically. Almost all of the books I bought were discounted or part of a deal, but 12 books adds up. And most of them are unread! Hopefully I will have more self-control for the rest of the year - I hope your ban goes well!
I need this in my life.

Last night I had a quick lil bookstagram photoshoot of my February book haul and oh my lord... I just kept grabbing books and books and books off my shelves for the picture and I realized I bought FOURTEEN books. Which is absolutely nuts considering I have books that are still on my shelves that haven't been read yet.

So I am officially putting myself on a ban. This post couldn't have come at a better time!
I put myself on a book buying ban because I had to save money since I was going to study abroad for three months, but when I was abroad I bought a few books haha. I'm now back on the ban though as I need to pay back my loan 😫 I'm actually not that upset about it since I still have a lot of unread books left haha, plus my birthday is coming up so the books I really want I can just ask for my birthday 😋 Good luck with your ban! All your tips are really good (well, minus the last one :P). I find it also helps to not go into bookstores/look online haha, though when you already know there's a book coming out that you really, really want, it does become a bit harder to avoid them 😂
