No Review Required: The Hype Monster Strikes!

OK SO THE TITLE OF THIS POST IS SLIGHTLY MISLEADING, as only one of the books discussed here was killed by the hype. But nevertheless, I hope you enjoy both of these not-required mini reviews!

Gonna be honest, I knew this wasn’t going to live up to my expectations at all, mainly because I just kept hearing about how great this book was over and over again. But again, I had the book, why not read it. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised. And to be fair, I was (a bit).

“Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything.”

For one, it wasn’t predictable whatsoever. I mean, I kept thinking to myself “oh I totally know how this is going to end”. But I, alongside the main character Scarlet, was tricked too. So, there’s that. On the flip side, okay??? I guess that can happen?? I mean I knew going in this wouldn’t be a gruesome, creepy circus book. Especially when the tone at times was off a bit (Spoiler, highlight to read: Like I knew people who were dead were NOT staying dead. I could tell that this was not going to be that kind of book).

Now the real question is, do I want to read the sequel. Yes??? I think? I mean, I usually don’t rate these mini reviews, but I would say this is a 3.5 stars from me. If the second book is as quick as a read as this one, then I’ll probably be borrowing it from the library. But I’m still debating haha.

To conclude, if you have time or have a copy, pick this up. It is an enjoyable read, I just didn’t find it as mind-blowing or good as everyone who’s said so.

THIS BOOK. Okay, so I put this review second because I know everyone is gonna be more interested in what I have to say about Caraval over this. Which I know, sad, but no one really knows The Witcher video game? WELL newsflash, it’s a great game, AND Netflix is making it into a series! And so, this is the book series that inspired the video game, and in turn the TV series.

“To be neutral does not mean to be indifferent or insensitive. You don't have to kill your feelings. It's enough to kill hatred within yourself.”

Well what can I say, it 100% exceeded my expectations. And mostly because I KNOW many of the characters, and I just loved spending more time with them. And one of the reasons why I started with this book (book 3), is because this is where the main plot kind of starts. I think the first two books focus more on the main character himself, WHICH I will get to at some point.

But anyways, yes, this was great. Though I do have to say that there wasn’t much action, and it was more of setting the scene for the rest of the books. But I’m just glad I got to read about young Ciri, because she was definitely a favorite in the game.

If you’re not a video game fan, this book might not interest you as much. BUT it is still a really good fantasy series, and so I highly suggest you give it a chance!

Have you read or heard of these? What were your thoughts on Caraval if you have read it? How do you feel about the "hype monster", and what do you do to combat it?

I put Caraval off because of the hype. Then I started reading eh reviews after all the initial good ones. Maybe I will get to it. Hope you like the sequel if you pick it up.

I hope I like the sequel too! It's kind of expensive at the moment, so definitely will have to wait a while or borrow it, idk!
I have read Caraval and enjoyed it, I found it very entertaining and fun, but it wasn't really worth all the hype. I think, just like it happened to you, I heard way too many praises about this book, it was never going to live up to my expectations, ahah. I think I might read the sequel though, someday, mainly because I'm curious about it ahah :)
Great reviews :D

Yes I 100% agree with you Marie! I think I enjoy it enough to continue because I am curious as well, but it's not super high priority :D
Caraval has had me so conflicted because on the one hand I like the sound of the premise, kinda, but yeah the hype. And it just hasn't been a priority like some others? But I might cautiously give it a try... and the Witcher game is supposed to be really good I guess, although I haven't played it. I can see trying that series too.

Yeah I mean honestly, I wouldn't put it as a priority because it's good, but not mind-blowing good. Also The Witcher: WIld Hunt is AMAZING and a lot of fun :D And the series is just as good haha, but maybe I am biased.
I feel you with the Caraval hype. I have had that book for YEARS now and yet... nope. I was hoping you'd end up really liking it and convince me to read it but that didn't happen either hahhah.

I DO know the second book because you showed it to me and told me about it, yay! I am glad you liked it, this makes me happy!

The hype monster used to scare me, but now I hate all books, hyped or not, so I don't even care about the hype monster anymore ;)

IT'S ONLY BEEN OUT FOR A YEAR OMG SHANNON. And yeah, sorry I didn't convince you. I mean, it was a really quick read so maybe you would actually like it? Sure, you're in this weird slump thing, but I'm also harder on these types of books haha.

AND I KNOW I SHOWED IT TO YOU (FORCED IT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE)

OMg shannon hahahah.
YAAASSS THE WITCHER! Glad you liked it. The series is kinda confusing because the first two books read more like short story collections but the main story is in blood of elves. I read all 3 and liked it a lot.

Yes I read about that, which is why I'll probably read the first two books later? After I finish up with the main arc.
I only heard bad things about Caraval before I read it.😂 Everyone was like YELLING about how bad it was compared to all the hype buuut I'd bought it so I finally read it a few months ago? And I really liked it.😂 I hated Scarlet, though. Like I wish Julian had narrated. :') BUT ANYWAY. I'm super excited for the next book and I love the magic! I honestly don't mind the hype if I'm keen on trying the book. It gets weary when it's hype for a series I already don't like .Then it's like EVERYWHERE and *runs away screaming*
😂

Hahaha it's because you had ALL those expectations in your head, so of course you ended up liking it!

I feel like that was the only book that I saw noticeable hype for, especially way before it was released! And I'm also looking forward to the next book, but not as much as you are haha.
You were right, Caraval was the review I was initially more interested in but Blood of Elves sounds cool... except I've not played the Witcher game. I have heard of the author of these books, though, and I totally don't know why. Glad you enjoyed the book so much. And I get your issues with Caraval, I also was not fully convinced folks were gonna stay dead in it but as a whole, it was enjoyable even with the hype and I will totally be reading the next book.

You probably heard of the author because I think the series itself is gaining more popularity, especially with the TV show in the works. And yay for thinking that it sounds cool! haha

It was definitely enjoyable and I'm also looking forward to the next book!
