Disappointing Reads of 2017

I don’t know about you, but 2017 hasn’t exactly been the greatest year for reading. For me at least. I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s just the fact that it’s a continuation of the dumpster fire from 2016. Or just the fact that I don’t want to waste time on mediocre books nowadays. And so that’s why I’ll be sharing 2017 releases I either read and hated or DNFed this year! (Also my favorite person*, Ely, ever shared her disappointing reads too!)

* this applies to more than one person, DO NOT COME AT ME.

I mean, I am not surprised I was let down by this book. To be fair, I did enjoy reading this, but Aristotle and Dante just blew my mind. I mean, yes, I kind of had pretty high expectations, which led to my overall disappointment, sadly.

I’m mainly sad about this book because it was just overall more simple than I thought it would be. Also I remember almost nothing from it. I know I had high hopes for this because someone (cough Shannon) convinced me it was a great read (IT’S OK SHANNON I STILL LOVE YOU).

THIS. I would say, and I’m probably not alone in this, was my biggest disappointment. Like I was really expecting amazing things. Amazing characters, well-developed world-building. And yes, the female relationship was there, but everything else … wasn’t.

I DNFed this. It was just rubbing me the wrong way. I felt uneasy uneasy about how I'm made to feel sympathetic about privileged people being targeted and oppressed by the bad guys...which are poor people.

I did like A Million Junes, but again, it just did not live up to the author’s first book.

The fact that I cannot even remember this tells me that it wasn’t memorable whatsoever. Like…what happened? At least this isn’t part of a series, haha.

I was a bit disappointed in this because I was misled by the pretty cover. LIED TO! The synopsis talked about serpents and perhaps mythical creatures? But I…didn’t get any of that. And the writing style, it’s very…British? But like, classic literature British (think Pride and Prejudice and To the Lighthouse). And I am just not a fan.

I DNFed this one too. Too much talking about hair, and…curses? Uh, something along those lines.

Or wait, maybe it was this book? I cannot tell the difference between the above book, and this one? All of them involve a group of girls, forbidden love, I don’t even know anymore, I feel like that trope is waaaay overused at this point. Also I DNFed this.

This one saddens me, because I really did want to like it. I heard such great reviews, yet I don’t know. I guess this one just didn’t work for me?

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of mediocre reads this year? More so compared to past years? Maybe my tolerance is going down...

I feel exactly the same way about Hunted, thought it was such a mess, and totally forgettable!

This year has been a bit disappointing, yeah. I tried but couldn't get into The Library of Fates (will try again...), nor Wintersong. Makes be very wary of hypes!

Oh I hate seeing a Million Junes on this list. I loved it but to be fair I haven' read her first book yet. I still need to read Wicked Like a Wildfire. I liked The Inexplicable Logic of My Life but I liked Aristotle and Dante a lot more. I definitely had some disappointing YA reads this year.

I've not read any of these! But I guess that's a good thing? I was curious about Wait for Me and The Bone Witch though!

Yeah, I do think this year was a bit disappointing. There were SO MANY hyped books being released, but few actually lived up to the hype. From your list, though, I only read Hunted, and I loved that A LOT, but again I usually fall in love with fairytale retellings. Some that let me down were Wintersong (really lovely writing, but where was the plot and character development IDK), and Blood Rose Rebellion, which I was excited for, because takes place in Hungary (where I live), was one of the worst books I've ever read.
Great post!

I haven't read A Million Junes, but both this book and the author's debut are on my TBR... I'm guessing this means I should start by her debut? Ahah. I'm sorry you were disappointed by Hunted, I have this one on my TBR and was very excited to read it, I'm sad to hear you didn't find it too memorable.
I think sometimes, we just tend to become harsher with our reviews, because...well, we tend to read TONS of books?! So we have higher expectations, maybe?
Great post! <3

Ooh, a few of these are on my TBR but I don't know—I trust your opinion, so maybe I should take them off?

And I'm your favourite person? Naaaaaw!!!

I WAS, in fact, about to come at you. Good thing you made a disclaimer. ANYWAY, I did not say that Wait For Me was GREAT, I did say that I LIKED it. I agree with you about a whole bunch of the rest of these too. Of Fire and Stars, sobs. Hunted, same. I also feel your issues with The Sandcastle Empire. Because I liked it, but DAMN, that one thing was bad. I also feel like my tolerance for crap has gone wayyyy down. Like, what if I read some of my favorites from 5 years ago now? Would I hate them? (The answer is probably.) This was basically the Year of Meh.

I'm trying to think of my mediocre reads of the year and it turns out I can't think of any off of the top of my head, which I think means that the ones I have read were just that unforgettable. I have got The Bone WItch on my shelf, though, and now I'm worried I won't like it. I tried to read it once before but chalked it up to me not being in the mood for fantasy. I do notice I am far quicker to write a book off and DNF this year, which is either a sign of mediocre reads I don't have time for or a sign I have less patience for books I'm not enjoying.

Agh I agree with some of these! I didn't like The Bone Witch (IT WAS SO BORING?!?) and Of Fire and Stars had so much potential and it just like diiied in every single way except being amazingly diverse. Why break our hearts like this. *cries piteously* I'm still looking forward a little to Wicked Like Wildfire though so I hope it doesn't disappoint too much for me. 🙈

Oh man, I can see the disappointment Val especially when you're looking forward to something! I still haven't read Inexplicable, but I can see why you DNFed the Bone Witch. A Shame about Hunted as well!

I haven't read any of these, so I guess I just saved myself disappointment! ;)

I love historical fiction and everything about The Essex Serpent sounds like it should be up my street, but I've heard so many people say they weren't a fan it's made me very nervous to read it - I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it and I hope 2018 is a better reading year for you!

I've felt a similar drop in my enjoyment of the books I've read this year in contrast to past years. I haven't read many 2017 releases, but of those I've had they've all been rather hit-or-miss. I've also had to read a lot for university, which might be why I've not been feeling a lot of books lately. Or maybe my tolerance is also going down with the more I read, since I've been finding more books similar to ones I've read before. It also probably didn't set the reading year off to a good start that my first read was a DNF.

I have heard mixed things about The Bone Witch and Of Fire and Stars, and I'm sorry they fell short for you. I've also read mixed reivews of The Inexplicable Logic of My Life, so I've tried to lower my expectations for when I get to reading it.

I hope the rest of the year brings you wonderful books that you will enjoy more, Valerie <3
