Reasons Why I Have Been Seriously Slacking

If you haven’t noticed, I have been really slacking on my blog posts. For the past…year. Just a couple days ago, I was *admiring* my blog as I usually do (haha) and saw that back in 2015, I was posting ~15 to 20 times a month. HOW did I do it? How did this amount change so frequently? Well, let’s all get into a time machine and pinpoint what exactly went wrong this past year.

Just, the US in general, and who’s in charge
I’m going to be honest, this is the number 1 reason why I haven’t been as active as I wanted to be. Being on Twitter wasn’t very good for me as I would just get bombarded with bad news after bad news. And obviously yes, that still happens today, but I’ve gotten better about coping with it.

Number of ARCs
This is also another big one! I am … no longer a fan of ARCs anymore. I don’t care much about them. In 2015 and most of 2016, I was drowning in piles and piles of ARCs. By the end, I was like “enough is enough, I need to start culling”. And so I became very picky. I thought through my requests, didn’t read books that were unsolicited, and now look at me! Four ARCs for the rest of 2017!

The mediocrity of some of these new releases
Now you might be thinking, “Val, aren’t you missing a bunch of great new releases? Shouldn’t they be on your radar?” Well. Nah. I mean they are on my radar thanks to Book Twitter, but too many times have I expected a great story from a book I requested, only to be let down. Which is why I have reduced the number of ARCs I request in the first place. And also why I now wait until I read reviews on the book before buying or borrowing it. Or even adding it to my TBR.

But wait, how can I read reviews when there are…

Fewer book bloggers in the community in general
I don’t know. I recently had to clean out a list of my faves because they were no longer active. And it was sad. I have made the effort to go out and check out new blogs, but I have also become really picky with which blogs I follow. I honestly wish I had more time to comment on every weekly update or every review, but I physically just can’t.

Rise in Bookstagram
This is where everyone migrated to. And I can’t even talk because I’m on Instagram too. I love taking and editing photos though, so it’s not like I am forcing myself. Or aiming to be at the top. In my eyes, I’ve already made it with my blog.

I'm also very happy with my Instagram now though!

Writing reviews
This is a chore. We can all agree. But at the same time, it is why I started blogging in the first place? The hypocrisy.

To be fair, I have been doing a MUCH better job writing reviews. THE SECRET: I actually talk to my phone through Google Voice. It lets me get all my thoughts out, without any typing. Of course, the end result is something that needs heavy editing.

Where do I even begin with among the red stars. So first of all it was very much reminded me of code name Verity, and that there's a heavy focus on planes and just flying and there's just a lot of technical jargon but not as much as in code name Verity which in the beginning or just packed full of jargon. But again the characters were amazing so basically what's happening is that these two girls that I have don't remember the name of but these two girls are amazing flyers and they just are from Russia and so they want to join they want to join like the war effort and by flying like planes and war planes and one of them wanted to be a fighter pilot and then the other is a navigator and so like basically a whole bunch a girls and they're all bunking together the basically all living together and training to fly.

BUT AFTER EDITS IT IS GREAT.

I got the idea of using Google Voice from my own laziness. I kept thinking of how awesome it would be if my thoughts would just automatically transfer to my blog. This isn’t exactly that, but close enough. And doesn’t involve using my hands or a laptop, so that’s a plus.

Amount of work in grad school
Yesterday I had a quarter life crisis because I have just been so busy at graduate school. BUT I’M FINE. EVERYTHING IS OKAY. But yes, no time for blogging unfortunately. I mean I could probably make time, but then where’s the time to read? That’s the problem I ran into in 2015.

Adult books
I’ve been seeking out more adult books now, because YA has completely burnt me out. Or at least a bit. And so I’ve been visiting the library to take out more books, because I have such a huge backlist. And that means no reviews to write!

Video games
This is the most obvious thing on the list, but I have been playing video games almost every day, and of course it takes up time. BUT I LOVE VIDEO GAMES. Anyways, I play them more than I did during my undergraduate years. Mainly because I now have my own (two!) personal TVs.

No motivation
I have had no motivation to do anything blogging related. Last year, I was creating graphics to go with my posts. Making sure everything matched and looked good on the blog. Now? Not so much.

Also this is the first discussion-ish post I have had in a while? So this is actually a big step for me.
But speaking of big steps, I do want to get back into blogging. Like fully get back into it, and post three times a week like I have done in the past. It’ll be hard, and there might be times where I slip up. But I think that with my enjoyment of reviewing coming back, and with all the books I’ve been reading, I can handle it.

So I guess get ready to see more regular posts from me! Woo!

Girl, I feel you. It's like I want to read all these amazing books and write about them, but also like I rather just binge on playing video games :D . I've begun to bargain with myself, "Okay, if you just write at least one post a week." It's so bad!

Hahaha I know right? So I'm replaying skyrim right now (because the first time around I did everything except finish the main questline), and guess what I didn't do this time? Finish the main questline. Oh well.

My posting is gonna get bad when the new assassin's creed game comes...OH WELL
Haha, I'm replaying it too, but I want to finish Oblivion before I really get into it. The dragonborn stuff is interesting but I literally did not care about the civil war main questline.
I feel all this and more so such Val. You're such a busy little poppet though that something has to give and I'm glad it was blogging so you could focus on friends and your education. You're future and well being are far more important. Funny you mention that actually about so many bloggers no longer blogging. I went through my Bloglovin' a few weeks ago and was so sad to see so many dormant accounts. There seems to be lots of new blogs starting too but I'm old and no one wants to be friends with me. Oooh, we need a motivational club for 2018, BLOGAVATION!

Get on it Val, all the kids will be doing it.

I MISSED YOU SO MUCH KELLY. I hope you never stop blogging, because it will be really sad without you. AND YEAH so many bloggers are just no longer around, it almost makes me wonder if it's worth discovering new ones, especially if they won't be blogging in a year. YES WE NEED A MOTIVATIONAL CLUB. Let's do it.

Let's go 2018
It's great that you know you want to get back into blogging. Knowing what you want is the first step. I agree, there are normally a whole bunch of things which lead to a lack of motivation to blog. I know there are plenty of things killing my blogging motivation lately, the biggest one being that I have a backlog of reviews to write, I have a backlog because I lacked the motivation to write reviews and preferred reading because watching the news and going on Twitter is just plain old distressing. I love the use of Google Voice to write your thoughts down well done for laziness points, maybe I should try that. At least you've spent doing plenty of other things with your time, yay for video games.

Yes it's never fun to have a backlog of reviews. Luckily I was able to catch up on them all. But I think it did really help that I used Google Voice to write those reviews.
Sigh. I swear, Twitter has become a landmine of awful news. I don`t blame you for flouncing. I just came back from the dead, so I totally get where you`re coming from.

Haha yeah, I can really only take so much of Twitter before I have had enough.
google voice...maybe im gonna use this for nanowrimo!

yes do it buddo
I don't request very many ARCs in general. Like you, I'm not always impressed with the newest releases anyway, so I see no point in going after ARCs and then getting myself stressed about reading and reviewing them on a schedule. I like to mood read, and that suits me fine.

I've also lost a lot of bloggers I liked to follow, and taking time to find new bloggers whose content I'm interested in does take some time commitment.

Exactly! It's why I have pretty much stopped, or only request a limited number. I've found it more enjoyable to just read whatever I find at the library or whatever I buy at the bookstore, so it's nice.

It's definitely hard to figure out if I like the content of newly discovered bloggers, but hopefully over time I'll find new ones.
I've noticed that there is more people doing bookstagram. I am not sure if it's because of the aesthetics but a lot of people are starting to do that more than writing blog posts. Many bloggers have stopped blogging too which has changed the dynamics of the blogging community. I understand with grad school, your time is limited to set reading deadlines for yourself. Sometimes it's refreshing to read what you want when you want without rushing to beat a deadline. I too have become more picky with ARC requests and I don't mind reading something from the library. A lot of upcoming books have some much hype which is sometimes bad since everyone has high expectations about certain books. It's disappointing when you read a hyped up book and then it falls flat. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and good luck with grad school :D .

I really think it is because of the aesthetics (I think that's part of the reason why I'm into it), though I don't think I would ever replace blogging with instagram (especially when the interface is not the best). I completely agree about reading what you want when you want. It's just much more fun and enjoyable, rather than a chore.

Thanks Nicole!
This is seriously happening to everybody I keep up with. You know what I'm glad you've made a comeback anyway. Missed seeing your posts!

Thanks Jazmen!! Hopefully blogging will make a comeback haha
Oh hi. The world is a very large garbage fire, and blogging seems far less vital by comparison. I feel this. I also feel you on the motivation. And I know it isn't on your list, but APATHY. Because I feel so much apathy. Maybe goes with the motivation. Now, when you say 4 2017 ARCs... do you mean even including ones from conferences and such? Or requested? Because I want to brag that I am DONE with 2017 ARCs. Because I am. But not if you mean conferences too because then BWHAHAH NOPE never.

Oh and seriously, the mediocrity struggle is a HUGE thing. Nothing sucks enough to make fun of it, but nor is it good enough to entertain me. That seems rude, if you aren't going to be great, at least have the common decency to be REALLY fucking horrible. YAY for more Val.
1 reply · active 389 weeks ago
YES APATHY. And yeah totally goes with motivation. AND NO I DON'T MEAN INCLUDING CONFERENCES because when do I count those? Oh Shannon. Done with 2017 ARCs? Wah. I mean I think I have 2 more? One of them is actually a 2018 ARC.

Yes. I would 100% stick around reading a book to make fun of it in my review. Because why not.
I look back at how much I used to post too and just...how.😂 I struggle SO BAD with doing 3 x posts a week (and one is a meme so it shouldn't be hard?!) and honestly it pains me how many book bloggers have stopped. All my really close blogging friends of the last few years are just...goooone. I know life and interests change but I really feel like the community is getting quieter. 😭😭 BUT YAY FOR BLOGGING WHEN YOU CAN! And when you want! Also your insta photo there is gorgeous.😍

Thanks Cait! And yeah I don't know how I blogged so easily back in the day? Maybe because there really was more people and just more motivation to meet new people? I feel like all interactions are done on Twitter nowadays, which is fine I guess...But yeah everyone's gone :(
I think EVERYONE has slacked in blogging at least a little bit because of that fucker. And it sucks that he's sucked so much joy out of fun hobby. Fuck him. Fuck him for everything.

Proud of your 4 ARCs left. I WANT TO BE LIKE THAT. But I can't.

Yours is one of the few bookstagrams I truly love. BE HONORED. But in all honesty, I think that is where most people went. Or just disappeared for good. It makes me so sad. People also talk less on social media now, and even less on blogs. I don't know what that means for the next few years, but I hope book blogging stays.

omg you're making me really want to try Google Voice. I'm having such a hard time writing reviews, and if I at least get some thoughts down immediately, it'd be easier to write later. I do that on Goodreads, but not always, and definitely not in-depth analysis. Review writing is hard, man.

SO READY FOR MORE VAL POSTS.

YEAH BE READY FOR MORE VAL POSTS

I hate that evil orange douchecanoe. I cannot wait until he is GONE.

And you can be like me, just dump all the ARCs you know you won't read, and only read the ones you know you're gonna get to! AND WOW. I AM HONORED TO BE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKSTAGRAM. I should get an award for that or something. I really hope book blogging stays, and I'm sure it will, but not sure how active it will be.

ALSO YES TRY GOOGLE VOICE. It's fun seeing how badly it messes up your speech hahaha.
All good points :) I've been blogging for a year now and I'm starting to get picky with my ARCs as well, cause it's just getting ridiculous, let's face it. I don't think I'll be completely done with them, but I don't want to keep having these piles upon piles of guilt. You know what I mean.
And it is true that Bookstagram is easier in terms of writing... don't think in migrating anytime soon though, because I don't really have print copies (#InternationalStruggles) and taking pics with the Kindle is kind of an upward slope. But I also feel jaded by writing reviews... so I've started making them into lists now. And I'll be reviewing less next year (I will also make my reading goal smaller) so I can have more discussions and themed lists instead.
The Google Voice idea is actually great! I am tempted to try.
