No Review Required (Shannon's Bookshelf Edition)

My thoughts on the following books are from Shannon’s overflowing bookshelf! Every time I visit her (which turns out to be once a year or so), I pick out a couple books to read. During this visit, I read TWO books, though they were pretty short since I was only going to be there for a couple of days.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. Downright loved. I’m pretty sure I loved it enough to head over to TBD and order the UK copy of it (because it won’t release in the US until late 2018 or so).

What exactly did I love about it anyways? Well one, IT TAKES PLACE IN SPACE. Now you may be asking “Val, why should I read about some rando girl in space? Won’t it be super boring?” Well that’s where you’re wrong, because it is not. And I honestly won’t spoil any more than that, because I definitely recommend going in blind.

“On my very worst days, I think of nothing but how vulnerable I am out here. I’m balanced on the edge of oblivion with only a fragile skin of metal separating me from the void of space.”

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this, because it was absolutely not what I expected at all.

This book is absolutely gorgeous, including the beautiful illustrations inside. Also, I was afraid that I needed to complete the previous two series before reading this, but that didn’t end up being the case at all. In fact, it really just read like Russian fairytales.

“This goes to show you that sometimes the unseen is not to be feared and that those meant to love us most are not always ones who do.”

There are six short stories within, and they are all marvelously told. My favorites were Ayama and the Thorn Wood and also Little Knife, though I equally loved them all. And as each story progresses, more illustration and decoration is added to the page edges.

I haven’t decided if I want to buy this for myself, but I think I won’t be able to resist if I see it in the wild (and not on Shannon’s bookshelf)

Have you read either of these yet? Which Grishaverse series do you like more, Shadow and Bone or Six of Crows?

This is the best post ever, I think! I really liked Loneliest Girl too! Except for that whole part that made me cry hahahah. But it WAS very unexpected. I really want there to be a sequel though. Like a LOT. I hope there is. OH! A nice Goodreads search says the author plans to write one, but has another book to write first. I'm game.

I like Shadow and Bone more, though I think I like the Six of Crows characters more? I know that probably seems weird, but it is what it is. I need to read that soon, you finished it so quickly!

I am very happy that my bookshelves have amused you. This is a fabulous commentary as to the greatness of my home library :D

Is it because your name is in it? AND OMG WHAT MADE YOU CRY? I mean to me the whole book was unexpected. AND YES I think it would be awesome if there was a sequel, but I don't know if that would be .a thing. OH WAIT OK THE AUTHOR IS PLANNING IT? I am game.

No that makes sense! I did really like the Six of Crows characters :D And yes you should read Language of Thorns, it's such a quick read.

I'm glad I got the chance to read your books :P Don't go looking too closely though.
Ooo I am definitely adding The Loneliest Girl in the Universe to my tbr!! My glad you enjoyed both the books in your list!

Yay hope you end up getting to it!
Oookay. I have read Lauren James' The Next Together series and I really enjoyed it, so I was eager to read The Loneliest Girl just as well. Plus, that cover is absolutely stunning, I love it so much. I'm SO CURIOUS now to actually read it, because you make it sound like there are some surprising things in this story - and that we should go into it blind and.. it makes me want to jump into the pages of this book right this second. I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much :)
I...can't answer your question about the Grishaverse, because I am probably the only blogger left who hasn't read Six of Crows, or Shadow and Bone. I know. What am I doing..... #oops.

Lovely post! :)

Oh yesss please go read The Lonelinest Girl blind, because you're right, it's just SOOO much better if you don't know anything!

Hahahah it's okay, I mean I have ONLY read Six of Crows and Shadow and Bone, and then just...stopped there? Even though I liked both books? So I don't know what I'm doing either :P
The Loneliest Girl In The Universe is one I really want to read but I;m scared I won't like it because everyone seems to love it. I think I'll have to treat myself, one of the last books I treat myself to before Christmas.

I'm sure you'll absolutely love it though! Ok I'll stop hyping it up haha. I mean in any case, it is a REALLY short read, so even if you don't like it, it's not like you wasted all that time.
Both of these books are on my TBR, and you might've persuaded me to buy them! I don't know much about The Loneliest Girl in the Universe but lately I've been in the mood for more space books because I haven't read nearly enough. I've also had a peak at the illustrations in The Langauge of Thorns and really want a copy just for its beauty. I'm glad you liked the stories so much - I haven't read many short story collections so I was a bit hesistant, but I adore fairy tales and that sort of mood in stories, so I think I will enjoy this one.

Personally I prefer the Six of Crows duology. They felt really fresh and different and I really connected with the characters and with the action filled adventure. But I did like the Shadow and Bone trilogy when I got around to reading it. I think I would've liked it more had I read the series a few years ago, but I just loved being in Bardugo's Grisha world for a little longer

Happy reading!

Thanks Helia! And you absolutely will not regret buying Loneliest Girl, it was a really good, and quick, space book. And I really only read Language of Thorns because it was so short, and I think I would have bought it for myself if I didn't already have photos of it haha. Maybe later when it's cheaper!

I agree with Six of Crows being fresh and different! I definitely loved the characters more in that book compared to Shadow and Bone!
