Top Ten Tuesday #102

Hosted by the Broke and the Bookish!

Top Ten Graphic Novels!

I was so tempted to put every single Ms. Marvel comic on here, because of what happened last weekend. I won't since I have a lot to recommend (and also want to read), but just know that I am very much emphasizing Ms. Marvel. It's a great comic and it has great representation.

Like I said, Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal is a GREAT place to start if you're new to comics. Also it features Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, and she is amazing. And a teenager. And a Muslim.
Saga is one that I recommend again and again and again. It's also a great place to start if you're new to comics AND graphic novels in general. The thing that makes me hesitate about superhero comics is that it's hard to find a place to start, and there's so much background on a certain character, that it's tough to know what "series" to read. With Saga, you don't need to know anything at all. Just pick up the first volume, and before you know it, you'll be on the fifth.

I raved about this earlier, but YES to American Born Chinese. Totally resonated with me (10 years later). It also is #ownvoices, and brings in the story of the Monkey King.

I recently read This One Summer, and loved the simplicity, yet hard hitting messages it conveyed. If you find this in your library, check it out ASAP.

I read Maus years ago for my English class. It was a great pick for 10th grade. Even though I don't remember much about it, I remember 1) loving it and 2) being more aware about what happened during WWII. If you love reading about WWII as much as I do, pick this up!

After reading Ms. Marvel, I also picked up Captain Marvel (Marvel Now) #1, and loved that as well. Though I was more confused with this one, as I didn't know the history of Captain Marvel. However I still enjoyed the story and the series!

I read The Graveyard Book and loved it, which is why I picked up the graphic novel version of it. And I was impressed! Rather than having only one artist, each chapter was drawn in a different style by different authors. I started to appreciate the diversity of the art after a couple of chapters (because to be honest I wasn't sure how I felt about it at the beginning).

Batgirl, Volume 1, in which never have I been more happier to see Batgirl back in action! I only was able to read the first volume, but I have yet to check the local library for the rest of the series.

Then there is Everything Is Teeth, which is about SHARKS. I can't say much else except that haha.

Lastly, there is White Sand, which is by Brandon Sanderson. I will never NOT recommend Brandon Sanderson, so of course he makes it onto this list!

Have you read any of these? I'm constantly on the lookout for more graphic novels at the library, so feel free to recommend me some!

I love Ms Marvel! I just picked up the series and I really need to get the second TPB. and the third... and fourth :P I think it's awesome to have a muslim superhero and it's the first time for me to read such a diverse comic :) (I think)

Saga is just plain awesome! Can't wait for the new volume to be published. Captain Marvel is really great too! I need to read on in the series, recently just read volume 1. And I'm a huge Batgirl fan. But I haven't read the older comics yet. I really adore Cameron Stewart's take on her. :D

Great list!

My Top Ten Comics
Gaaah, Ms. Marvel and Saga are the top two comic series that I really need to start!

I'm glad to know you like Captain Marvel. I've been on the fence about starting it for too long now.

I want to get into Batgirl but after I've made my way through some other DC comic series and her earlier series.

I'd definitely recommend Monstress, Paper Girls, Jossie & the Pussycats if you're looking for some fun comics and Motor Crush because androgynous main character, bicycle races and a focus on drugs and addiction.
I read the first volume of Saga through a friend and as much as I'd like to continue it, buying all the volumes feel so costly for me. Especially since I'm not really a graphic novel reader. But I'll probably get to it some other time...
Saga is one I finally need to read. And Capt. Marvel I'm very interested in- I've heard that Kelly Sue DeConnick does a great job with the character, and with her getting a movie in a couple years I'd like to read some of these. It seems like I saw a good review somewhere for This One Summer too, it looks familiar.
I've only ever read 3 graphic novels in my lifetime and that was when I was kid. I've seen a lot of buzz about Saga and I've considered giving it a shot. Ms Marvel definitely sounds like my kind of book.
This One Summer was a great read, I can't believe I forgot to add it to my list this week. Glad to see how popular Saga is this week!
I must admit, I've never been able to get into comics all that much apart from The Walking Dead series. But I'm absolutely loving these girls power ones Val. I had no idea they even made Batgirl! I have the first Saga edition too that I haven't gotten around to reading yet but I know so many like yourself have loved the series. I'm going to try and track down a copy of Batgirl. Thanks so much for sharing Val, brilliant list <3
I've read Saga, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel and really enjoyed them! So many amazing recommendations here that I'll be sure to pick up!
Kamala Khan is my hero! I do not go out of my way to buy super hero comic books unless they are Ms. Marvel comic books. I even dressed up as her for Halloween a few years ago!
