Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from ARC may or may not be in the published edition.

I have been putting off this review since forever. About a month and a half or so. The reason for that is because I just didn’t know how to review Scythe. Because it was that good, but in a way I just couldn’t possibly explain.

The great thing about Neal Shusterman is that he has these worlds that are constrained by rules of his own making. About two years ago, I heard him talk about it during a signing. He showed the audience pages and pages of his manuscript, all written out in ink. I couldn’t imagine all the hand cramps that came with that. His dedication to world building is clearly shown in this new series, and I highly recommend you at least read this for that.

In this science fiction world, humanity has gained immortality. Without hunger, disease, war, or misery, you could say that this is a pretty good world to live in. Well, except for the fact that there are people called scythes, in charge of maintaining the human population. Everyone is scared of them, sometimes there’s bribery, and this book (and most likely the series) focuses on the corruption within the group. That’s where Citra and Rowan come in, two apprentices who not only have to learn the morals of what it means to take a life, but also find a way to survive themselves in this political climate group.

Though I absolutely adored the characters, I was very much drawn into the plot and the world-building. It’s not every day where you read about how to pick someone to kill. And the different scythe mentors, Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie, each had unique methods. One who goes for the instant kill, and the other who confronts the person first. Also pretty sure Scythe Faraday was one of my favorite characters from this book.

As with all great books that I’ve read, I just don’t have that much to say about Scythe. But don’t take my lack of words as me not liking it. Because I did! Compared to the rest of the books I read in 2016, this one is way above all of them.

I find really, REALLY great books difficult to review or talk about. All I could think about them is that: asdnskfkahfkafk read this book, person! LOL. ohgosh, knowing he manually writes everything first just raised my respect for him even more! He's my all time fave author (and one of my goal is to read ALL of his books!).

So glad you loved this! I always adore Shusterman's characters and how he develops them. Definitely my fave aspect of his books are his characters! Also his books are too great and are always thought-provoking! I totally understand your lack of words, Val. Great review, still :)

That's awesome that he is your all time fave! I really love all his books, and maybe one day I'll read them all. I think including this one, I've only read 3. Thank you!

This sounds like my kind of book! I'm not usually one for teen protagonists, but I'll have to give this one a try.

Oh man, I'm so excited to finally read this book. I love Neal Schusterman's writing and the concept here sounds really interesting with the reaping and the scythes and their methods. I love how thought provoking it is too. Lovely review Val!

I have heard that this book is awesome, and I am glad to see you agree! I really want to read it as the synopsis sounds fantastic.
That sounds really interesting! I've seen this book around, because the cover always sticks out to me, but I don't think I've read another review. I may just give it a try.

I think this would be really your type of book, to be honest. I hope you end up reading it!
I am still yet to real a Neal Shusterman book, considering his themes are totally my thing. This sounds brilliant Val, the morality of playing god and giving a face to what are basically trained grim reapers. Reminds me a little of the Michael Grant Messenger of Fear series but darker. Awesome review Val, definitely adding this to the to buy list <3

I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU HAVEN'T READ ONE OF HIS BOOKS because this is totally your type of read. I think it is definitely darker than Messenger of Fear, or at least the same level of dark, if that makes any sense. <3 Thank you Kelly
I know what you mean, sometimes a book is just SO good that it's basically impossible to review, and really you just want to throw the book at people and shout 'READ IT!'. So I'll just imagine you're doing that :P

Yes I pretty much am! If you imagine me doing that maybe it'll prime you to pick it up :)
So. GOOD. I feel like I somehow threw a mildly coherent review together but... mildly only. Because... what can you even SAY, other than basically shoving this book into people's hands? Maybe we should just do that.

Yeah I am just not good at that kind of stuff and I give up.
Great review! You had nothing to be worried about haha. I preordered Scythe and I'm so disappointed that I still haven't managed to pick it up! I'm definitely going to aim to read it in February though! It sounds wonderful and I've heard great things from many reviewers about it!
