Henry Denton doesn’t know why the aliens chose to abduct him when he was thirteen, and he doesn’t know why they continue to steal him from his bed and take him aboard their ship. He doesn’t know why the world is going to end or why the aliens have offered him the opportunity to avert the impending disaster by pressing a big red button.

But they have. And they’ve only given him 144 days to make up his mind.

Since the suicide of his boyfriend, Jesse, Henry has been adrift. He’s become estranged from his best friend, started hooking up with his sworn enemy, and his family is oblivious to everything that’s going on around them. As far as Henry is concerned, a world without Jesse is a world he isn’t sure is worth saving. Until he meets Diego Vega, an artist with a secret past who forces Henry to question his beliefs, his place in the universe, and whether any of it really matters. But before Henry can save the world, he’s got to figure out how to save himself, and the aliens haven’t given him a button for that.
Shaun is a major geek and all about nerdy shenanigans. He is the author of The Deathday Letter, fml, and the forthcoming The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley. He can be reached at shaun@shaundavidhutchinson.com. He currently lives in South Florida with his partner and dog and watches way too much Doctor Who.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from ARC may or may not be in the published edition.

What did I just read? Wow. All I can say, is that this is incredibly underrated. I know initially I thought that this would be strictly science fiction, but man was I wrong. Instead, I was hit with the harshness of reality.

Henry Denton has been nicknamed Space boy. Ridiculed for claiming that he was abducted by aliens, he faces bullying in school almost every day. And along with that, he also needs to learn to deal with the loss of his boyfriend, who committed suicide without any warning whatsoever. For Henry, there really isn't anything stopping him from not pressing the button, the button that determines whether the Earth is saved or not.

Although I wasn't expecting a huge focus on contemporary, surprisingly, I didn't mind it. Every character had their place in their novel, from Henry to his science teacher, Ms. Faraci. I grew to love Henry's family, which although a little dysfunctional, still managed to come together in times of need. Like his Nana has Alzheimer's, and it was heartbreaking watching her forget names or people. Then there was also the brother, Charlie, who was such an asshole to Henry, yet still worried about him when he went missing due to the abductions.

And speaking of these alien abductions, it made me wonder whether this was something that really happened to Henry, or if it was a huge metaphor in regards to Henry's view on life. This is something the reader has to decide for themselves, and in this way, We Are The Ants reminded me a little of We All Looked Up. Is the world really going to end? Or is it all just Henry's imagination? And also, was he going to press the button or not?

We Are The Ants is a story of all the up's and down's of life, but mainly the more negative parts of it. Henry blames himself for Jesse's death. He can't seem to move on, especially when Diego comes into the picture. He can't even find a way to reform his friendship with his best friend Audrey. And yet even when everything seems to be alright, life finds a way to fuck it up again. This is life, and you just have to accept and acknowledge it.

Overall, there were a lot of things in We Are The Ants that really touched me in some way, and there is no way I'll be able to put it all into my own words. All I can say is that THIS IS REALLY GOOD, and YOU SHOULD READ THIS.

I have heard so many good things about this book. I can't wait to read it!

I'm glad!I hope you get around to it soon :)
I haven't heard too much about this book - but it sounds really interesting. Does it have some focus on LGBTQ+ themes?

It does, but it's not the main focus of the novel. And when I say that I mean that even though the MC and multiple characters are LGBTQ+, it wasn't emphasized nor was it the plot of the novel. I would say the main focus is on depression and the way the MC deals with it.
I added this one to my TBR when both you and Rashika mentioned it was a good book in the chat but reading this review makes me so excited! I love that even though it looks like a sci-fi, it actually handles a lot of real life themes. I hope I'll love this one as much as you guys did! :)
Lovely review, Val!

Yay I'm glad that it's on your TBR! Weeee. I hope you end up liking it as well!
UGH. That cover. It's so beautiful. It sounds so beautiful though - a mix between contemporary and sci fi and death and heartbreak, from what it seems like? I'm always up for that combo though. Because I like pain. (...I am not mentally sane, honestly) I loved your review, Valerie <3

Yes that combo is AWESOME, I've read a lot of books with that combo actually! Yet this one was even more unique than the rest! And that's ok, I like pain too, totally fine.

Thank you Nirvana!!!!

I haven't heard of any of his books until I read this one! So I will have to check out his other ones! And I am very sorry about your dog :( I would be heartbroken as well.
I want to read this, because Val liked it!! That's a good enough reason, right? Oh, that and it's been on my TBR for seriously like, a year. So those things. I'm tired, Val. And I wish I could make up funny names like you do on my blog.

GOOD YOU SHOULD. And yes that is reason enough, basically. I'm sorry you're tired Shannon (lol), You can make funny names on my blog, but you might have to log out of ID/Wordpress or whatever.
Kynn just reviewed this one too Val and it sounds like such a deep and moving read. She struggled with the bigger picture type scenario too. I often struggle with read like that or with the interpretation being left to the onus of the reader. But I'm so bloody excited to read it! Awesome review Val and so glad you enjoyed it <3

Yep I just read it and commented on it! And I agree with pretty much everything she's said, no surprise. Thank you Kelly! I think it's unique to leave the interpretation up to the reader, but sometimes I just want to KNOW. :)
I've heard such great things about this one - fabulous review! The premise is intriguing, and it seems like it packs an emotional punch to boot.

It does! And thank you!
A friend of mine felt the same about this book. I'm not completely sold but I'm glad you liked this one, Val!

Thank you Jazmen! I hope someone can convince you to read it one day ;)
This sounds interesting! I thought it sounded like a metaphor before you even mentioned it, but I guess it makes sense to leave it up to the reader. Even if that always drives me crazy (We All Looked Up included). I want to read this now!

Yes it drives me SOOOO crazy, like can you please tell me what actually happened and whether this was all true or not, because that would be awesome hahah. And you should read it! DO IT. Peer pressure!
So I totally HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS BEFORE. And tbh, the title is kind of off-putting for me?!? But omg it sounds sooo good and I loved your review and CONSIDER ME CONVINCED. *dashes off to add it on goodreads*
I love the sound of this story, and the good reviews it's been gathering around the blogosphere has me super curious. The synopsis and general gist actually reminds me a little of Patrick Ness's TROUJLH - in that there's a grander thing happening, but it's examining a personal coming of age story. If it's anything like Ness's work I will definitely have to check it out. The characters in this book sounds so human and endearing. Fantastic review Val <3
AHHHH. I REALLY WANT TO READ THIS. Ever since I read the blurb on Goodreads, my mind was just like: YEP, this one is for you. So it makes me super happy that it's so good!

I absolutely love the sound of how the whole sci-fi premise and its reality is up to the reader to determine. I normally go with: it's real, but I am super interested to find out what I think in this one.

Henry sounds darling, but also like life keeps shitting on him, which makes me sad :(

Lovely review, dear! <3
