Top Ten Books Completely Exceeded My Expectations

I've noticed that with the tons of books I read, I've been slowly branching out into new genres. Like YA contemporary, sci-fi, and even romance, which I thought would never happen. And there have been books I thought I wouldn't like, but then I DID. And some that were just MORE than I expected, which just blew me away.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - Honestly, I think I put off reading this just because I didn't really know what the subject was about, and I thought it would be boring. Instead, it only turned out to be one of my favorite novels of all time. AND TEARS.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown - First off I only read this because the main character shared the same first name as me, and I was just reading it for some challenge, BUT IT ENDED UP BEING AMAZING. And I just had so many feelings for the MC, that I had to take breaks in between meetings.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown -  I read a good amount of mixed reviews, so when I got a copy of it through NetGalley, I wasn't THAT excited. But man was I in for it. Red Rising was just pure awesome with tons of action that I could not put it down. It was a good start for 2015.

The Last Good Day of the Year by Jessica Warman - This is actually my most recent read, and although it's not one of my favorites, I'm surprised that I even liked it at all. Despite all the creepiness and the stalking.

I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios - SURPRISE I actually wasn't expecting to like this, or at least I was going to lump it in with all the other generic YA contemporaries (which to be honest, I have nothing to lump it in with, so I don't know why I thought that). But IMYT ended up being just as good as all my friends said it was.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater - Her Shiver series didn't appeal to me, so I wasn't really excited for this novel, even though I heard so many good things about it. BUT WHERE WOULD I BE WITHOUT BLUE AND HER BOYS NOW? HUH?

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven - I knew I was going to love this one, but I wasn't expecting ALL THE THINGS that came with it. Like I got more than what I asked for, and I was already asking for a lot to begin with. And also Jennifer Niven is the sweetest person EVER.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson - I didn't know what to think of an epic fantasy, but I am so glad that I read this one before any other, because Sanderson's writing is gold, and I didn't even know it!

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - Loved loved loved LOVED THIS BOOK, and again, like the Raven Boys, I read good reviews on it but just never really was excited about it until AFTER I finished the book.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - I remember when this first came out and Rowell was just becoming known, I thought it was a cool synopsis and nothing more, but then I just related to ALL the characters, and now it's one of my favorites.

Yay for TTT freebie! Were there any books that you weren't expecting to be beyond awesome?

You've said that SO MANY TIMES NOW HAHAHA. Like what the heckkkk. EVERYONE IS DONE EXCEPT YOU FAYE. Those weekend twitter chats were gold. ugh.
Yes to so many of these!! I thought I'll Meet You There would be a sob story, yet it was really well done and emotional and heartfelt yet fun at the same time. It balanced the light and dark really well. I thought Cinder would be really awful and silly and dumb, but I was wildly surprised by the great characters, fairytale twists, and the world-building. I thought Raven Boys would just be plain weird. It was quite addictive and beguiling though. Awesome list!

Exactly! I also thought it would be the usual trope BUT IT WASN'T and it held much more deeper messages. Hahah I also thought Cinder would be like a middle grade story, but it wasn't. AND SAME TO THE RAVEN BOYS.
I really want to check out I'll Meet You There, great picks, Val!

Thanks Jazmen! That book is AMAZING
I still have to read The Book Thief...I really need to do that soon. I really like historical books set during that time period, so I have high expectations that I'm sure will be met. I'll Meet You There was a book that originally I immediately thought wasn't for me, but the more I hear about it, the more I want to read it! I absolutely adored both Cinder and Fangirl. And I completely second that Jennifer Niven is the sweetest! I'll admit I was tearing up during her panel...:')

The Book Thief is AMAZINGLY GOOD. You won't regret reading it! And that panel was amazing! I started rereading a little of the book while waiting in line for her autograph, and I started tearing up right there!
Ooh, I'll have to check out Hate List then, I'd been sort of interested in Jennifer Brown, but not a whole lot because of the average reviews. It sounds interesting though.

I felt the same way about I'll Meet You There! When I first heard about it, months ago when I was using it in a WCW post, I wasn't super into it or anything and I thought the plot was going to go differently. Anyway, I was blown away by it. It was so good. I seriously wanted to re-read it right after finishing.

I knew I'd like ATBP, I just wasn't sure how much I would since….I saw some things coming and the beginning (after the first chapter) didn't draw me in.

I still need to read The Raven Boys, The Lunar Chronicles and Fangirl. DON'T HATE ME. I actually….own all of those. Minus the second and third books of TRB and Winter from The Lunar Chronicles.

I've been hearing a bit about Brandon Sanderson, but I don't know who he really is or anything. Lol.

Okay, a book I didn't think I would like was Every Ugly Word by Aimee L. Salter, I was surprised (kind of) with how much I really liked it.

I thought the Hate List was really good. I wasn't expecting it to make me feel ALL THE RAGE. So yeah. I THINK YOU SHOULD PICK IT UP ONE DAY. And yeah I mean Holly yelled at me to read it, but I wasn't expecting ALL THAT.

YOU HAVE TO GO READ THEM ALL ASAP. NOW. NOW NOW NOW.

What the heck Amber you can't just say "but I don't know who he really is or anything. LOL" HIS BOOKS ARE GOLD. ALL OF THEM.

I don't think I've heard of Every Ugly Word. Or maybe I did and I keep getting it confused with Ugly Love
You know something? I was pretty surprised with Cinder as well. I'm not typically a fan of Sci-Fi/fantasty type of novels (especially in YA), but man, I can't get enough of those books! I'd say Red Rising as well, but with all the fantastic reviews it's gotten, I've kind of expected it.

great list, Val!

Hahah yeah Cinder was kind of a surprise. And in the beginning I actually read some mixed reviews on Red Rising, so when I read it I was really impressed. And also I guess I kind of associate Red Rising with Half Bad because they were both released around the same time AND they have a similar cover :P
oooooh I like this topic very much! THE RAVEN BOYS!!!!!!!! also All the Bright Places and I'll Meet You There, for sure.

Still need to read The Book Thief. :p

I think the most recent was 5 to 1 for me. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but it was completely beyond awesome.

YES YES YES

What the heck READ THE BOOK THIEF.

I want to read 5 to 1 so badly, I'm so sad I didn't get an eARC of it. Ah well. LIBRARY
The Book Thief and Cinder both exceeded my expectations as well! That's when I started really buying into hype... at least for a while because then I got burned a couple of times! But it did teach me to try out new things, like you mentioned!

Hahah yes same here. Though I don't think I would've discovered Cinder without help from the blogging world, but it was SO much better than I thought it would be. And yeah, the hype killed me a couple times too haha
Totally agree with I'll Meet You There! I wasn't expecting to like it at ALL, much less for it to become one of my favorite books of all time. I also didn't think I'd like Cinder, and I did! This also gives me a significant amount of hope for Red Rising ;)

Another book, not on your list, that I thought I'd hate but LOVED so, so much was Rites of Passage! I almost didn't even consider reading it and then... it was perfection! Very fun list!

I KNOW. It was completely different from what I was expecting. I was expecting the typical contemporary book you know! AND HAVE YOU READ RED RISING? READ IT!

Ooo Rites of Passage. I also have reservations with that BUT IF YOU SAY SO. Then I will try it. If I see it
I need to read most of these but I hope they will exceed my expectations too.
I adore Sanderson and you are right his writing IS gold. Lol. Seriously that man can't write a bad book. :)
I loved Cinder too. Such an unortodox retelling. And every sequel just makes it better. :)

Ahhh Sanderson! I really need to finish reading all of his books hahah. But at the rate he's writing, that might be impossible. The sequels for Cinder all just get better and better!
I saw The Raven Boys and said "I MUST COMMENT ON THIS HERE POST" because, let's be real, if it has something to do with The Raven Cycle I'm probably there, bouncing on the balls of my feet, trying not to explode with all of OT5/Bluesey/Pynch feels. That book RUINED me. Completely ruined me. Like for any and all other books. I've reread the entire trilogy twice in the space of 4 months. I'm freaking ECSTATIC and overly excited because in a few weeks I'm rereading it AGAIN for June rereads month.

Ridiculous, I know. But whatever.

I'll Meet You There is an all-time favorite contemporary of mine. It totally broke me and I LOVED it. I couldn't get enough of it, either. There was just so much about it that was great. I didn't feel like I was reading this cliche small town girl/small town boy story. I really felt for Skye and Josh. I'll definitely be rereading it!

Same with Fangirl. I wasn't sure I was going to love it at all, but I impulse bought it and was more than pleasantly surprised! I absolutely loved it and completely related to all of the characters. Cath is totally me. I can't wait for Carry On (even though I have no idea how she's writing it but whatever).

GOOD IDEA THERE SYDNEY! GOOD IDEA. And SO MANY REREADS wow! I have to buy a physical copy of Blue Lily, Lily Blue to complete the series (so far). Man you must have been pissed to hear that The Raven King got pushed back for publication!

I honestly thought it would be so cliche, like you said, BUT IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER :D Glad you agree with meeee.

Oh yeah I don't know how she's writing Carry On either. But I guess I'll still read it? I might reread Fangirl THEN read Carry On? (Look at me, saying I'll reread stuff. HA)
