Finishing All My 2017 ARCs! (Recap)

So, I am happy to say that I have finished reading all the ARCs I requested for 2017, which is actually a SUPER good feeling. And I’m also proud of that fact because 1) I don’t think I did the same last year, and 2) I really cut down this year in requesting because I knew I did not enjoy having a huge pile of required books to read. Honestly, it was such a good idea on my part because this year wasn’t exactly the best year in regards to the ARCs I had. And I’m not sure if it is because I am worn down and tolerate nothing, or because there truly wasn’t anything good.

I guess I wanted to use this post to recap all the review copies I have read for this year? Let’s take a look at my list:

(Yes I didn’t read four of them, oh well. It happens). But still, 24 read!

Favorite Reads

I think I can safely say Starfish (which isn't on this list even, because I didn't request it) for sure, followed by Goodbye Days, Gentleman’s Guide, and lastly Far From the Tree.

I’m just eternally grateful for Holly and Shannon for getting me a copy of Starfish, which features a biracial character dealing with social anxiety. It was such a refreshing read, with a character I could completely connect to. AND IT WAS AMAZING. Literally cannot shout about it enough.

Goodbye Days made me tear up, but not as much as the author’s debut, The Serpent King. Lastly, I loved both Gentleman’s guide and Far From the Tree, but both of them were quite long and took awhile to get into.

Reads I Could Have Done Without

Hahahah. I would say The Secret History of Us, Wait for Me, Almost Autumn, and then the last book I reviewed, Three Sides of a Heart.

The first three were just unbearably boring. I really liked Jessi Kirby’s previous books, but The Secret History of Us was missing A LOT, even though I was glad it was so short. Wait for Me was a bit meh, and I didn’t care for it too much. Same with Almost Autumn, which I’m bummed about because it was literally the first physical ARC I ever received in the mail (I KNOW right?). Lastly, and maybe because this is still very fresh in my mind, Three Sides of a Heart just didn’t wow me at all. Like I don’t even mind love triangles, but I was confused for more than half of the short stories in that anthology.

The DNFs

This year, I set my Goodreads Challenge to 1 book, AND IT WAS A LIFE CHANGER. No longer did I feel pressured to read and finish all the books. And so I definitely had a higher rate of DNFs this year than my previous years of blogging. So with that, I would definitely say The Sandcastle Empire, Wicked Like A Wildfire, The Bone Witch, and then Spindle Fire.

The Sandcastle Empire just really rubbed me the wrong way, with its setting of all poor people being evil and all. And then I’m a bit bummed about both Wicked Like A Wildfire and The Bone Witch, both books I just was not in the mood for, yet was anticipating. Lastly, Spindle Fire was just not my thing, and it was just so boring, that I HAD to stop.

The Enjoyables

Lastly, I want to end on books I very much enjoyed, but just didn’t make my favorites list. There’s Eliza and Her Monsters, Dare Mighty Things, Among the Red Stars, and then Wild Beauty.

I actually loved Eliza and Her Monsters, but I skipped the whole middle of the book! Because I just could not wait until I got to the reveal. So whoops. And there was also Dare Mighty Things, which I again, loved, until I got to the END. Among the Red Stars I thoroughly enjoyed, as it was another WWII book, but this time about Night Witches. But I have nothing to say other than that. Finally, I loved Wild Beauty, but definitely took time to get into!

That’s all I have to say about this year! How do you feel about this year’s releases overall? Are you looking forward to 2018?

SO I'm curious, how do you handle DNFing ARCs? I always force myself to read them when they are ARCs. I have one right now that might legitimately be the worst thing I ever read. I'm only like 10% in so I think I want to give it a little more time, but already I'm thinking, "this sucks!"

I don't force myself to read them, but usually I write a mini review or note about why I couldn't or didn't finish it hahah. But I don't rate it any stars or anything!
You got so many amazing ARCs this year :) I'm so happy you loved Starfish, I really want to read that one, I hope I'll love it as much as you did :) Far From The Tree was pretty amazing just as well, loved the family vibes and the characters <3 I haven't read Goodbye, Days just yet, but I cried so much while reading The Serpent King, I don't know if I'm ready to read that one haha :)
Great post! :D

I HOPE YOU READ STARFISH. It is such a beautiful book, and I'll probably keep pushing it on you until you do read it?

And yes I loved The Serpent King. I was the same way with Goodbye Days, which is why I waited so long before reading it. But then I read it and absolutely loved it!
YES, feel free to keep on pushing me to read it and remind me every few weeks here and then, so I'll remember to buy it hahaha :P
Oh my gosh, this is so exciting about Starfish and Gentleman's Guide! So many people are raving about them both and I think I need to pick it up. I can see why you DNFed The Bone Witch, it was pretty tedious. Gotta pick up my Eliza book soon!

Yes I absolutely loved Starfish, and I think you will as well!!! And yes pick up Eliza, it's a pretty quick read!
I have read quite a few good reads this year but I admit a lot were not ARC reads but purchases I made. A lot were ARCs as well, but it has been a good year. I only wish I'd been a bit smarter about my ARC requests as I have a lot still outstanding for this year. I better crack on. You are reminding me I need to read Gentleman's Guide, though.

Yes read Gentleman's Guide! I actually took a break requesting ARCs for awhile, just so that I could catch up on the ones from before!
I have two copies of Gentleman's Guide and haven't read either :') So proud of me. I also haven't read Starfish yet unfortunately even though its your fav book in the entirely world. Sorry bro.

Kind of sad to see Wicked Like a Fire and Bone Witch on the DNFs because both sounded so good. Alas. Not all books will blow our minds.

My general feels on this years releases was that I didnt read the books I should have. YAY. I deserve a gold medal. Unrelated but I really wish I had the HC for THUG.

Bye poop. and No i am not really looking forward to 2018 because that means I am going to be older and that I will need to figure out my life. Eww. Thats nasty shit.

I can't believe it Rashika. I thought you READ STARFISH???? Didn't I make everyone in the DM read it? What the HECK. And yeah, kind of upset about the both of them, but whatever.

I ALSO WISH I HAD A HC FOR THUG. Or paperback is fine.

Bye poop
Nice job, Val! I feel like this year's releases were, on the whole, crap. I mean, sure there were some gems in there, but Idk, it's probably a combination of the world being on fire AND not-so-great book year, but I really felt it extra hard. Basically 2017 should die. I don't know if I should look forward to 2018- for awhile I was being optimistic, and look where that got me. So... I think I am just hoping for the apocalypse at this point. Also, yay for Starfish. I am so happy you loved it!

Thanks mom! AND YES I TOTALLY AGREE HAHAHA. And definitely the first. Hopefully late 2018 will be better...maybe. But who knows. I'm sorry about how shitty 2017 was for you <3 <3
I've only read half of your favorites list, so I need to fix that. YAY FOR STARFISH AND GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE. And I'm glad you enjoyed Wild Beauty even tho you didn't love it. I still have an eARC of The Bone Witch that I just don't have much interest in anymore after hearing such mixed things. But oh well. I don't really have any plans to read the rest of them that you didn't care about. Haha.

I'M SO JEALOUS YOU FINISHED YOUR 2017 ARCS.
Wow, props to you for reading so many ARCs! That's quite an accomplishment to have only passed on 4! Ever since I heard you raving about Starfish I've been dying to pick it up. I'm also quite excited about Wild Beauty -- I love the author and THAT COVER!
