Sonya was born with the rare gift to feel what those around her feel—both physically and emotionally—a gift she’s kept hidden from the empire for seventeen long years. After a reckless mistake wipes out all the other girls with similar abilities, Sonya is hauled off to the palace and forced to serve the emperor as his sovereign Auraseer.

Tasked with sensing the intentions of would-be assassins, Sonya is under constant pressure to protect the emperor. But Sonya’s power is untamed and reckless, and she can’t always decipher when other people’s impulses end and her own begin. In a palace full of warring emotions and looming darkness, Sonya fears that the biggest danger to the empire may be herself.

As she struggles to wrangle her abilities, Sonya seeks refuge in her tenuous alliances with the charming-yet-volatile Emperor Valko and his idealistic younger brother, Anton, the crown prince. But when threats of revolution pit the two brothers against each other, Sonya must choose which brother to trust—and which to betray.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from ARC may or may not be in the published edition.

Burning Glass is tough to review. On one hand, I was extremely hesitant to read this because it was 500+ pages, and it didn't seem worth it with all the mixed reviews. But then on the other hand, it did exceed some of my expectations.

Sonya is an empath. She can feel all the emotions around her, but hasn't mastered controlling them yet. This leads to the reader being thrown right into the action, with Sonya burning down the building housing pretty much ALL of the Auraseers. So when the emperor comes to collect the eldest Auraseer to help protect the kingdom and himself, there is only her. And life begins for Sonya in the palace.

The beginning of Burning Glass was a little tough to get through. After the whole affair of accidentally killing everyone (fun fun!), we see the life of Sonya in the palace, and how she has to conceal her emotions for the elusive Anton, the emperor's brother, in front of the emperor. And then the emperor himself has these crazy mood swings, and it's never really evident as to how he'll act in front of Sonya.

There's also Anton, and his whole history with him being the true heir, while his brother is just a fake. The relationship he had with Sonya was more so on and off. It was obvious he cared for her, while also holding back because he didn't want to get her involved. On the other hand, Emperor Valko wants Sonya and he claims to love her, and it's just pretty uncomfortable. And a little boring. Most of the book is Sonya's thoughts about how she's going to figure out Anton's secrets while manipulating the Emperor. So again, not much action really.

It isn't that I hated Burning Glass, but more that I never connected with the story. Most of what happens occurs in the palace, which bored me a little. Also, I couldn't help but think of how Shadow and Bone did a better job with this type of plotline (though I will admit that Burning Glass is definitely its own story).

It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I did not like about this book, maybe it was the romance, or the plot itself, or just the disconnect from the characters. Either way, if you can make the time to read 500 pages and think it's worthwhile, I say go for it.

Omg, 500 pages, that sounds awful, but the plot sounds awesome. It reminds me of Elsa meets Celaena.

Points for using a Frozen reference. <3 33

POINTS FOR AN ANASTASIA GIF, YESSSS. <3

Ooh another "true" heir, well then. I seriously don't know what I think about that (funny how you used an Anastasia gif though above considering, yeah).

I'm sorry you didn't like this more! It sounds interesting, but I feel like it wouldn't work for me either, necessarily. I like the idea of the majority of the book happening in the palace. I'm curious about whether or not the MC ever deals with like…killing everyone. Like suffering from PTSD or anything like that.

Nice review, of course!

Yeah it is another true heir book. Maybe. I don't even know the truth actually ahahahha. And yeah I think the MC does deal with killing everyone...ish. Though I don't know, I feel like it wasn't as prominent as I thought it would be. Maybe I just missed it? WHO KNOWS.
I'm reading so many mixed reviews on this one. While I do like the plot around an empath, the romance and the disconnect from the characters I'm not too keen on. Lovely review Val!

Thank you Jeann! And yeah, mostly I was just bored! Sadly.
That start (with everyone dying) sounds really dramatic! :O
It's a pity you didn't connect to this book more - I feel like that's really important in distinguishing good from great books! :/
I have yet to read Shadow and Bone...but I will get right onto that, because Burning Glass sounds good, but I'm unwilling to start it because yeah 500 pages and if there's something better out there I'm always gonna go for the better option! :) Thanks for sharing, Val!

You're welcome Geraldine! And yes I feel like it's really important to connect with your characters, but it's also something that's subjective to each reader. This one just wasn't for me! And go read Shadow and Bone! (I say this even though I haven't finished the series whoops)
I am seriously terrified every time I see that you've posted a review. I didn't even want to read this book, but just seeing that you'd reviewed it made me scared. YOU ARE A SCARY MUNCHKIN. I'm pretty sure I'm going to avoid this one now.

WOW I FEEL LIKE ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS ARE LIKE THIS NOW ON MY REVIEW YOU DOODOO. Don't worry. I think we have the same tastes maybe. You'll do right to avoid it. Muhahaha.
There'd been so many reviews of this book that talks about the lack of spotlight on her powers. And at over 500 pages, it seems like a lot of work. I can't get enough of humans with superpowers in books though, so this might still make my wish list this year.

That was kind of the reason why I didn't pick this up right away. 500 pages is a lot of time to read something that I may not even like. I really came in with low expectations

I have this one to review and I started it but I just don't know. Ughh 500+ pages I can't deal.

Exactly my thoughts! Let me know if you do end up reviewing/reading it.
Books like this are so hard to review. This is one book I'm staying away because the hype scares me, but I may come back to try to read it once the hype dies down. At least you didn't hate it? :)

Yes that is so true, I didn't end up hating it ahahahaha. I think I have done a pretty good job with reading hyped books vs non-hyped ones. Maybe.
I have been trying to review this damn book for over 2 months. I liked it. I did! Though not the beginning. And maybe not even the middle. Or the end. Seriously, I liked it while I was reading- it didn't even feel like 500 pages to me at all- but now I can't even remember WHY. Maybe I left some notes on my Kindle or something? I know I liked Anton, and the actual Empath stuff. I know I was very confused at the beginning. And then I remember a snowy carriage ride and it seemed like a Christmas carol. Who even knows. Great review, way better than mine will be (some nonsense, a Jingle Bells gif, and a tangent about Russia all sound likely).
