Top Ten Tuesday #22

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Books People Have Been Telling You That You MUST Read!

WOW so basically this post is going to be all about how I'm a big poop for not listening to any of your suggestions in the past six months. Ha I guess that's fine and all. First I misread this as "Top Ten books you have been telling people to read" but then I read it again and realized my mistake.

Plus that would've been boring.

But anyways, I do have a long extensive list of all the books people have been telling me to read, and I know by the end of the day, it's going to grow even more.

Ok let's start!

Divergent by Veronica Roth - HAHA. I KNOW. I haven't read it yet, but you guys are determined to make me read this? I'm sorry to crush your dreams and all, but unfortunately I'm not that interested *hearts shattering everywhere* OK ok ok ok I will try it someday in the future, don't hurt me please!

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo - THIS I HAVE JUST BEEN LEAVING FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR. I will get to it, I promise! You can stop telling me to continue on with the series now, thanks! Haha!

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - I SWEAR this one is actually in my Amazon shopping cart, I just haven't bought it yet because I want it to ship to my new address at school, rather than at home, where I'll never see it again!

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer - Ughhhh I have this on my shelf but I'm also waiting for the school year to pick this one up. You know? Because then I will be broke and have no awesome library to fall back on. Seriously the library system in my region is beyond awesome. And then everyone wants me to read Cress as well, which is understandable haha!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas - This is a big one because ONE) I know it is awesome and TWO) It's ALSO sitting in my Amazon shopping cart, just waiting to be purchased. So yes, don't worry about this series it will also be read this year!

Every single book by Brandon Sanderson or in other words, Words of Radiance - I have entered Faye's awesome Sanderson Read-along, and we are currently reading Elantris. So I will soon read them all! (Yes Faye if you see this, this is aimed at you. I will read Words of Radiance and bask in the awesomeness of Shallan x Kaladin, ok bye)

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater - SORRY I'M SORRY. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the plot, but I know tons of people love her writing, and I personally love The Raven Boys.

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden Series) by Julie Kagawa - I'm also not sure about the whole vampire thing going on here, but I'm likely to give it a try a couple years from now. Hahahahah sorry sorry. I DON'T KNOW OKAY? I just don't know about vampires.

Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen - My problem with this is just that I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet! And being broke does not help the situation!

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson Series) by Rick Riordan - A lot of you guys have read this, while I haven't, I'M SORRY. I don't know when I'll get the time to splurge these all. Ugh. I'm just scared that these are too childish for me!

How about you? Do you have any recommendations for me? Any books readers love to recommend to you ALL THE TIME?

Feel free to link your TTTs, I will be recommending one MUST read book on your post. Because I can do what I want. And I've read a lot of good books lately HA.

I am not even going to tell you to read Divergent. Yes, I loved it, but Allegiant kind of ruins the whole thing anyway, and then you never understand your feelings about Divergent again. Why bother? But YES to Siege and Storm! So good! And... all the others are ones people say I should read too ;) So I am no help there!

As for recommendations... well, I don't know if you've read them, but I always recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, and Unwind by Neal Shusterman. So unique and amazing!

I've tried reading the Immortal Rules, and I just couldn't get into it. There's enough people talking about it again that it makes me almost want to pick it up and give it another shot, but I doubt that I will. Shiver sounds really amazing.

I've read 6 of these! HA. Awesomeness. And...and would you like me to tell you? Maybe just whisper it? Nah, I'll yell.

WHY HAVE YOU NOT READ THRONE OF GLASS YET?! VAL. BAD VAL. GO READ IT! GO GO GO!

Okay, yup, I'm done now. Don't fret. Tooootally done now. *ahem* I should probably read Siege and Storm myself. I don't know...I liked book #1 just fine, I just never felt motivated with book #2. And I'm suspicious of Julie Kawaga for no reason, but I do want to try Talon, so maybe I should try her vampire or fairy series? Maybe. Percy Jackson is hilarious. I hope you eat that one someday too. ;)

Niiiice commenting system. I WONDER WHO INSPIRED THIS.

I have Throne of Glass on my list this week too. I'm very excited to read it, but also really scared of the hype surrounding it. I did love Siege and Storm though so I can highly recommend that!

Percy Jackson and Divergent are both really good. Throne of Glass was better than I feared and worse than I hoped it would be. I'm currently reading Scarlet, but it's taking me ages, because I keep interrupting it to read other books.

Ooh, you changed your commenting system! Wise choice. I kind of hate Blogger's commenting system, lol, because it's so damn trippy all the time. T_T And I don't think I have to tell you, but I agree with pretty much all the book choices everyone has been pushing you to read. Like, seriously, what are you still doing here, reading these comments? GET TO THOSE BOOKS, SISTAH.

1. Divergent: Some people are hating on this book because of how unrealistic and impractical it is, and while that may be true, they have to realize that Divergent takes place ONLY in Chicago. It's not like factions have taken over the whole of the U.S. So those "plot holes" aside, this book was AMAZING. Especially for a debut. Maybe not one of the best, but still pretty awesome. I loved the characters so much and Four is just swoony like you wouldn't believe. I'll just ignore the part where you said you weren't interested in reading this and will continue to push this on you. Only problem is that the sequel wasn't as good, though, and I heard the finale wasn't good at all. /nervous

2. Siege & Storm: BUDDY, YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THIS SERIES. I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING. I just re-read both Shadow & Bone and Siege & Storm last month and I need not tell you that it still blew my mind the second time 'round. Ruin & Rising was just as epic. THIS is how you write a good fantasy. Omg, I just get so fangirly whenever I think about Leigh Barudgo. Read it soon. Please? No, READ IT NOWWW.

3. Anna and the French Kiss: Haha, so many people have been pushing this on me as well! I hope you buy it soon because I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it, we seem to have similar tastes in books. :D The only reason I never gave this a go earlier is because the title was so cheesy I felt sure I wouldn't be able to enjoy it lol. Really crossing my fingers here that you'll love it as much as everyone does.

4. Scarlet: Well, at least you have a library, right?! The libraries here are so outdated I can't even. And yup, really need to get to Scarlet too, especially since I loved Cinder. I need more Prince Kai.

5. Throne of Glass: Another good fantasy book. I found Celaena's assassination skills slightly questionable in this book, but apparently she becomes a lot more violent and assassin-like in the second book, which I'm hoping to read soon. Other than that, ToG is just as great as the hype is telling you! Can't wait to hear what you think of it :D

8. The Immortal Rules: I think you commented on my review of the last book? Yup yup, don't worry about the whole vampire thing because that won't be a problem. If you went into it expecting something like Twilight, you'll get the shock of your life. The Blood of Eden series is so much darker, so much gorier, and so much more awesome than Twilight will ever be. The main character is badass like you wouldn't believe, and the plot... SO MANY REVELATIONS!!! You won't regret reading this.

10. Percy Jackson: TOO CHILDISH?! Okay, I read The Lightning Thief years ago (before I even got into YA books), but from what I remember, no way is it childish. Sure, the protagonist may be a twelve-year-old, but it's kind of like Harry Potter -- Percy is still so relatable, and his humor is laugh-out-loud worthy. You'll fall in love with him, promise. And the mythology aspect was done so well. It was actually this series that taught me more about Greek and Roman mythology than any of my schoolbooks did, lol. I need to re-read it soon...

Hm, not sure if you need anymore recs, but I'll give you a couple all the same! > :) Okay, you need to read The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. The first book, The Raven Boys, may not be THAT great (it's kind of boring, admittedly), but the plot is so beautifully complex, and the story gets much better in the sequel. I'm dying for the third book now. Not sure if you've read it, but Ender's Game is another great sci-fi book. Even though the author is a huge jerk, his book was still really good. Ooh, and you should try All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill! A TIME TRAVEL BOOK THAT DIDN'T SUCK. A thousand times better than The Here and Now, seriously. It just gave me all these feels. *sniffle*

I'll stop spamming you now and be done with this monster comment. I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to write so much. O_O

I need to read so many of these, too! The Immortal Rules, Scarlet, Anna and the French Kiss, and Shiver are all on my TBR list. I do think Divergent itself is worth reading, if your curious about it at any stage. I didn’t really like Insurgent, and I didn’t bother with Allegiant after I was inadvertently told some major spoilers, le sigh. Personally, if it was now, I'd drop the trilogy after the first book. Awesome list Val!

I feel like I should complete an excel spreadsheet for all the books people tell me to read - it's so hard to keep track!

Now, get your act together and read Scarlet!
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
I haven't read Shiver or The Immortal Rules, or Percy Jackson. I will one of these days--soon. Well probably not Percy Jackson. I think I missed the mark to enjoy those books.

Divergent was a great book but I have to admit it's like way over hyped now. I'm just pretty much over it but Anna and The French kiss was so adorable and quirky I loved it. I do hope you read that!

I think once I've settled with moving and everything I will read Cinder!

I'm so happy that this everything by Sanderson read-a-long is happening because it means you will all come to appreciate his lesser known works with me :D Elantris is my favorite of his I think just because I love the magic so much, but omg Words of Radiance is amazing toooooooo!
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
So many of these overlap with mine!! Here's my two cents: Anna and the French Kiss and Divergent, get on those stat!
I really enjoyed them both :D
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
Okay, so A) READ ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS! And then read the other two books and fangirl over Stephanie Perkins with me. Seriously, just finished Isla today and it was fabulous. B) Siege and Storm is also on my list, and I really need to finish it before the series gets spoiled (and if that happens, I'll be crushed). C) Divergent is a too-hyped book. Although I gave it 5 stars and loved it, I probably wouldn't if I read it again. But I loved the movie. D) I LOVE The Raven Cycle series (GANSEY) and must read all Maggie Stiefvater's books. E) Scarlet is awesome. F) I also need to read The Immortal Rules. And, wait for it, I haven't read the Percy Jackson series yet either, though I love the movies! I think that's it. Haha. :)

Thanks for stopping by My TTT!

PS: this is random, but how do you get this commenting system? Because Google is being screwy and I'm so over it. (This is probably a stupid question, but I'm just not tech-savvy and I really hate Google right now).

I loved eight out of those ten books. I didn't love the Stolen Songbird or Words of Radiance because I haven't even read them yet, but I have a feeling I would at least like them both. You have some seriously amazing books on your list. You should just read them all. :D
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
WOAH Valerie, I totally agree with you here, with Throne of Glass, Scarlet and ESPECIALLY Percy Jackson! I hope you will be able to pick them up soon because they are awesome ;)

When I first read Divergent I loved it, like head over heels in love. However, I got nervous about reading Insurgent (even though I own it) because I heard it isn't as good and then Allegiant got released and people hated it even more. So I'm not in any rush to continue the series. Not this year, at least.

How have you NOT read Siege and Storm? Come on, there's STURMHOND in it. Who you're going to love and then there's MOAR of the Darkling.

I did not love Anna and the French Kiss which saddens me to no end.

Scarlet! Yes, you gotta read it. I'm about 70 pages into it and then I stopped because I wanted Cress with me when I finished Scarlet. So now I need to continue.

Alright, you seriously need to read Throne of Glass and I'm happy that you will be. I recently read the novellas and they emotionally wrecked me. GAH, NEED HEIR OF FIRE SO BAD.

I need to read a Brandon Sanderson book soon. So yes to all of his books!

I LOVE THE RAVEN BOYS, TOO. Dying from all the waiting for Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I need to read Shiver as well as The Scorpio Races soon.

I do want to read The Immortal Rules some day. I still love a good paranormal book/series. Heee.

I actually found that Divergent wasn't for me, but I know plenty of other people have loved it. And judging from your reviews, I really do believe that you'll love both Shadow and Bone and Anna and the French Kiss. Plus I'm biased and think everyone should read ToG because I love that series with an unholy fervor.

VAL - THERE ARE SO MANY FANTASTIC BOOKS ON HERE! I absolutely loved the Percy Jackson series, Throne of Glass, the Lunar Chronicles and Divergent and I hope that when you do end up reading them that you end up liking them all just as much as I did. :) I still have to read some of Julie Kawaga or Stephanie Perkin's books as well, but they're definitely on my TBR list! Thanks for sharing Val, and BRILLIANT post! <3
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
You MUST read Divergent indeed AND Throne of Glass AND Percy Jackson #2. Well every book listed except for Shiver. Didn't like that book and actually DNFed it...
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
Oh good grief girl, you've been living under a rock :D
Divergent, it's a must. I fell in love with dystopians reading THG, but Divergent really cemented it for me. The Immortal Rules is just as brilliant. Allison is kick ass and has a sword, SWOOOORD I tell you. Anna and the French Kiss is just stinkin cute! I can't wait until you finally get around to reading a few of these, I love seeing peoples reactions to books I've read, it's like rereading them all over again.

Thanks for sharing Val <3

Oh my gosh, Percy Jackson is a must!! :D Those were the books of my childhood (well, Middle School years). Divergent, Shiver, the Immortal Rules...THRONE OF GLASS. O_O All great reads~I hope you enjoy them!
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
Okay, I hate to join everyone, but YAAAAAS! Throne of Glass, Shadow and Bone, Scarlet...so many great ones.
1 reply · active 554 weeks ago
Yes, yes, yes to Scarlet. I love it more than I liked Cinder (which was a lot). The new characters that are introduced are absolutely fantastic (WOLF). :D

Even though I didn't like Siege and Storm as much as Shadow and Bone, it's still definitely worth the read. Again, there are new characters introduced, and they really add to the already fantastic story. Personally, I think there was not enough Darkling (but I think that way about everything to do with the Darkling - GIMME MOAR).

Divergent is a good book, in my opinion, but there are better ones out there.

I didn't really like Throne of Glass, but loved its sequel Crown of Midnight, and prequel The Assassin's Blade. So yes, give it a go - but don't be deterred if you're not a huge fan!
