Top Ten Tuesday #103

Hosted by the Broke and the Bookish!

Ten Books I Loved Less Than I Thought I Would

Are we going to play the "this book sucked" game, or the "this book was so much better than I expected?" I have no idea, I think it is definitely fun to bash books, so let's do that. Woo!

Literally looking forward to Of Fire and Stars since the beginning of 2016, and it just didn't work out for me at all. And for a ton of other readers as well. So I guess this really wasn't just a me thing.

Also was looking forward to Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit so much, even more than Of Fire and Stars. But that just, didn't end up working out for me either. I was just way to distraught and discouraged over the main character's father actions. Big nope for me.

I don't even know WHAT I read after finishing Vassa in the Night. No idea whatsoever.

I figured that after having good luck with the author's previous book, I would like Bright Smoke, Cold Fire. But that did not end up happening at all. Instead the book was fairly boring, and was really slow.

I WANTED TO LOVE Carry On. But I should've know that Rainbow Rowell couldn't write fantasy. Or at least couldn't write my expectations of fantasy. I set the bar too high.

Let us not go back to the trainwreck that was Zenith. The best part was that it wasn't even the whole book. Literally Part One pissed me off so badly that I just couldn't.

I'm pretty sad about Ivory And Bone, and I really wish it was the prehistoric fantasy we all deserved. Sadly it was not. Or at least it wasn't for me (and my buds).

Have I mentioned I fought so hard to get an ARC of Into the Dim? In the end it wasn't even worth it because I hated the characters wayyyy too much.

Riders wasn't that great either. I'm not so keen on the one special girl surrounded by all guys type of trope. Especially when she refuses to tell ANYONE what is going on. CUE FRUSTRATION.

To me, The Girl At Midnight felt like a carbon copy of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Maybe if I hadn't have read that first, I would have loved it. But sadly, nope.

To sum up, nope nope nopity nope to all of these.

I read most of these in 2016, which didn't end up being a good year for me reading wise. Hopefully this year is better!

"Bright Smoke, Cold Fire" made my list too. I mean, I *liked* it well enough, but not in the way I anticipated liking it. I'd heard such amazing things about Rosamund's books, so I think my expectations were overextended. But I'll confess I am excited to read "Zenith." It'd be an "out of my comfort zone" read for me, but does sound curious. :)
I haven't read any of the books on your list, but I am planing to read a few of them and I hope I like them.
My TTT.
I kept meaning to read Into The Dim, but I have to admit that I'm not in any hurry to read it now. I've seen quite a few negative reviews about it. I hate it when I don't like a book as much as I thought I would!
Carry On I was REALLY curious about after loving Fangirl. But I've seen enough to know I might not like it. And Into the Dim was on my list but it came off after I saw several lackluster reviews. Too bad it was disappointing. :(
I haven't read Carry On yet because I have a feeling I'm not going to love it. I was super excited about it, but then I started hearing things, and now I'm just MEH. Also, Zenith just sounds like it's not good, so I'll be passing on that one.
I haven't read any of these yet but I do have a few of them on my TBR! Hopefully I like them more than you did. Sorry these didn't work out for you!
Carry On is on my list this week too. I actually didn't even finish it.
My Top Ten
I actually wound up liking Carry On better than I thought. I think I am in the minority there though. I still want to read Georgia Peaches but have lowered by expectations. Great list!!
I feel the same way about Vassa. I wrote a review for it right after I read it but I still haven't posted it because it made no sense because I still have no idea what I read.
I agree on so many of these. I found Vassa in the Night confusing and weird, Into the Dim and The Girl at Midnight were predictable and kind of boring. I've been seeing Of Fire and Stars a lot today, I'm glad I didn't end up getting a copy at BEA because I could instead get some books I did love. Great list!
Ugh, I was so disappointed by Carry On. Fangirl is one of my favorite books, but Carry On was such a fail. I did really like the scenes with Baz and Simon, but that was it.

Haha, Sebastian and I wrote a whole discussion post on the disappointment that was the 2016 reading year. xD

Sorry you didn't love Carry On as much as you'd expected to. Bummer. Love that book!
Haha, I felt the same about Vassa in the Night (well... I actually DNF'd that one early on because I was like WTF I CAN'T DEAL). I also DNF'd Of Fire and Stars because it was ... well, dumb. Some of the most generic fantasy ever. Sorry, just because you have a gay main character doesn't automatically make the book good... you actually have to try to make the rest of the book something worth reading. XD
The only two I've read were Ivory and Bone and Into the Dim. Neither of them thrilled me. I still definitely plan to read Carry On, though. Hope I like it more than you did!

I almost listed a few of these myself! BSCF was a close one BUT I had a nagging feeling I wouldn't love it when I started so I figured it didn't count? And Riders... well, it WAS a letdown, but not as much as some of these other monstrosities bwhaha. Luckily, Holly prepared me for OFAS so my expectations were already lowered. And I chose Ivory and Bone too, because so sad. I actually liked Into the Dim though. And I will NEVER read Zenith- because between your hate for it, and Tika's review (which STILL stands as one of my favorite reviews of all time bwhahah) just no. Same with Georgia Peaches. And you have stopped me from buying The Girl at Midnight at several turns, so thanks ;)
The only ones I've read from here is Girl at Midnight and that's exactly how I felt about it. I loved Carry On though because SNOWBAZ!
I totally agree with what you said about CARRY ON. I was expecting so much from Rowell given how much I enjoyed FANGIRL, but it fell flat and I could not understand the hype. It was this weird mix of fantasy and fan-fiction and contemporary, and it just didn't fit the darker tone of the story. Just a complete mess. I'm glad someone else feels the same way, because I was beginning to think that I had read a different book :P
